Lakmé Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI made a comeback for its March 2023 edition. Held at the Jio World Garden in Mumbai, the four-day style fiesta kicked off with Day 1 on March 09, designated sustainable fashion Day.
Keeping with the sustainable fashion day theme, Day 1 of the event was dedicated to designers and initiatives celebrating sustainability in all its glory. Shades of sustainability were beautifully weaved into contemporary styles.
Upcycling was the motto this season with an array of designers focusing on zero-waste fashion shows. Here’s a low down on the noteworthy fashion moments from Day 1 of LFW X FDCI, tap ahead.
Koytoy by Kunaal Kyhaan’s new collection, ‘Maharaja by the Bay’ was the highlight and definitely the standout collection of Day 1. The silhouettes revolved around safari sets and flared oversized pants from satin cotton, crepe, buttery modal satins and soft viscose blends along with hints of leather. It captured the life and joie de vivre of an off-duty Maharaja in a stylish manner - hitting the nostalgia trend quite right!
The unique saree draping in designer Anavila Misra’s new collection was definitely inspiring and noteworthy. This season the designer paid homage to Dabu, an ancient mud resist hand-block printing technique from Rajasthan.
When Ruchika Sachdev of the label Bodice, decided to showcase her collection in a driveway in natural light instead of a conventional runway. The backdrop of her show featured multi-coloured fabric scraps from her studio. There were flared trousers, pleated shirt dresses, and flowing silhouettes added to the relaxed, edgy look of the ensembles.
Nitin Bal Chauhan’s collection “The Outsider” had an unconventional inspiration. It was the Albert Camus novel 'L’Estranger' (The Stranger) that encouraged Chauhan to convey the author’s views through fashion by translating the subtle emotions onto garments that were eminently eye-catching.
Shades of blue and indigo were prominent across many collections on Day 1. Akaaro's collection “The Sky is Mine” was inspired by the project ‘The Sky is Blue’ from the international Klein Blue that the French artist visualised. Adopting this unique artistic approach to fashion, the brand brought to the stage its signature handwoven fabrics developed using unconventional materials like stainless steel, monofilament silk, along with cotton.
