The sentimental value of jewellery in India cannot be quantified. A great deal of effort goes into creating these opulent, timeless pieces that maintain an air of opulence while remaining timeless and versatile.
Newfound awareness and appreciation for ancient jewellery-making techniques with new-age consumers have helped revived many styles. We've rounded up some traditional jewellery styles to wear ahead of the wedding season:
Jadau is the art of making jewellery in a specific fashion. This is done without any use of adhesives, essentially fixing these gems into a framework of gold.
Kundan is a form of jewellery made from gold, usually with a core of wax. The term ‘kundan’ itself means highly refined pure gold, and this type of jewellery generally involves 24k pure gold. Kundan jewellery holds credit as one of the oldest forms of jewellery in India with a rich legacy of over 2,500 years.
Largely popularised from the Mughal times, this jewellery style involves infusing beautiful colours by using enamel dust to embellish metal surfaces.
Temple jewellery is among the most artful of all jewellery types and plays an essential role in the cultural heritage of the southern states in India. Embossed with depictions of gods and goddesses from the temples in south India, these simple-yet-artful pieces of work are sculpted from gold and silver.
Filigree is an ancient Indian jewellery art form with gossamer threads of gold and silver interwoven intricately to create a magical web of forms.
The exquisite appeal of Pachchikam or Pachhi jewellery has helped it acquire a vogue status in the contemporary world. It bears striking resemblance to kundan jewellery. However, this jewellery style has silver as the base.
