Indian batting genius Mithali Raj announced her retirement from international cricket on June 8, 2022. Her career spanned over a jaw-dropping 23 years.
Netizens took to social media platforms to pay tribute to Mithali, but most of us are unaware of the records she's broken during her illustrious career.
Mithali Raj, the Jodhpur-born sportswoman, is one of the greatest women cricketers to have graced the game.
During her 23-year stint, the 39-year-old has represented India 333 times across all formats of cricket.
Apart from holding several world records, she is the first Indian captain to lead our country to two World Cup finals.
Mithali is the highest run-getter in women's internationals. She has played the most number of games as a captain and is also the youngest to score a double hundred in women's Test matches.
Daughter of an ex-Indian Air Force employee, Dorai Raj, Mithali was enrolled for cricket training in Secunderabad because her father didn't want her to develop the habit of sleeping till late hours.
She led India into the World Cup final in 2017. Although India couldn't win the trophy, the Indian women’s cricket team and Mithali won millions of hearts.
Mithali Raj went past England's Charlotte Edwards in July 2021 to become only the second women cricketer to breach the 10,000 run-mark.
The former Indian captain has a biopic on her life, ‘Shabaash Mithu’, releasing next week on July 15, 2022, with Taapsee Pannu playing the reel-life Mithali Raj. The film chronicles the highs and lows of Mithali’s life.
“There is nothing more powerful than a girl with a dream and a plan to realise it! This is a story of one such girl who chased her dream with a bat in this 'Gentleman's Game',” wrote Taapsee when she announced the release date of the film.
