10 Upcoming OTT Releases In August We’re Excited About

A slew of new and exciting shows, films and documentaries are expected to hit streaming platforms this month

It’s been an upbeat year for OTT platforms with some extremely entertaining and engaging content being made exclusively for them. This month too, OTT channels are dialling up the fun with original content. Here’s what’s going to be streaming soon on an OTT platform on your screens:  

1. Heart of Stone 

A spy thriller with Gal Gadot leading the charge is undoubtedly something to look forward to but for those of us in India, the anticipation also lies in the fact that this is Alia Bhatt’s first Hollywood venture and that too, with her as the antagonist! Gadot plays secret agent Rachel Stone in the thriller directed by Tom Harper of Peaky Blinders fame. On the behest of a peacekeeping operation, known as Chamber, Stone is guarding the world’s most powerful AI known as the Heart with Bhatt playing hacker Keya Dhawan who wants to thwart her mission.

2. Made in Heaven Season 2 

After four long years of fans clamouring for a second season, the highly-anticipated Made in Heaven is coming back with newer twists and turns in the lives of wedding planners Tara and Karan. The first season captured the audience’s imagination with its engaging storyline and performances by Sobhita Dhulipala, Arjun Mathur, Jim Sarbh and Kalki Koechlin among others and this time there will be newer faces such as Mona Singh, Trinetra Haldar and Ishwak Singh among others. Expect laughter, celebrations, tension, intrigue and a whole lot of drama.

3. Taali 

After impressing with her gangster act in Aarya, Sushmita Sen is back in National Award-winning director Ravi Jadhav’s Taali. In the show, Sen plays the role of transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant. The biographical drama series will shed light on Sawant’s relentless pursuit of recognition for the third gender in India.

4. Guns and Gulaabs 

After creating successful streaming content with shows such as The Family Man and Farzi, creators Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK decided to have some pulpy fun with their third show – Guns and Gulaabs. The show marks Dulquer Salmaan’s debut in the long format and stars him along with Rajkummar Rao, Adarsh Gourav and Gulshan Devaiah in a show that celebrates the good, the bad and the funny. Set in the 1990s, there are enough pop cultural homages and retro references to evoke nostalgia for those who have lived through the time of audio cassettes and hand-written love letters.

5. Commando 

The first Indian film franchise to be adapted into a web series, director Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s Commando sees newcomer Prem Parrijaa step into Vidyut Jamvwal’s shoes with Adah Sharma for company. The action-packed drama will see a new danger for India and a new mission for the protagonist to swing into action and save the country.

6. The Jengaburu Curse 

Being termed India’s first climate-fiction thriller series, The Jengaburu Curse delves into man’s never-ending need for nature. Set in a small town in Odisha, the show follows the story of London-based financial analyst, Priya Das. When her father, Professor Das, goes suspiciously missing, Priya is forced to come back to Odisha. As she starts to search for him, a series of strange events ensue that unravel an unlikely connection between the indigenous Bondia tribe and the mining state of Odisha. The Jengaburu Curse, which marks director Nila Madhab’s OTT debut, features Faria Abdullah, Nasser, Makarand Deshpande, Sudev Nair, Deipak Sampat, and Hitesh Dave in pivotal roles.

7. Depp V. Heard 

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s dramatic defamation trial will be up for viewing on the streaming platform. The three-part series examines the infamous case that captured the world’s attention and became the world’s first trial by TikTok. Showing both testimonies side-by-side for the first time, this series, directed by Emmy nominee Emma Cooper, explores the highly publicised event, questioning the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society.

8. Only Murders in the Building Season 3 

The popular series’ third season has none other than Meryl Streep making her presence felt as stage actress Loretta. The unlikely trio of Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short have kept the audiences intrigued and entertained with their antics and this time, they get behind the scenes of a Broadway show. Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) is a Hollywood action star whose Broadway debut is cut short by his untimely death. Aided by co-star Loretta Durkin (Streep), the trio embarks on their toughest case yet, all while director Oliver desperately attempts to put his show back together.

9. Zombieverse 

After successful zombie shows such as Kingdom and All of Us Are Dead, comes another zombie show but with a difference. Here, South Korea’s capital Seoul has turned into a zombie universe and a group of reality show contestants must complete challenging quests in order to survive. They are given a variety of tasks every day and have to earn food and other survival tools in order to move up in the competition. Park Jin-Kyung of My Little Television is one of the contestants in the reality horror series.

10. The Hunt for Veerappan 

There are many reasons why the late Veerappan was considered one of the most notorious criminals this country has ever seen. Delving into these reasons and the untold stories behind the man known as Sandalwood Veerappan is debutant director Selvamani Selvaraj’s documentary The Hunt for Veerappan. It follows the 17-year-old manhunt for the dacoit and smuggler before he was killed in 2004. A treat for true crime fans, the four-part documentary features interviews and observations from people who knew him well.
