7 Holi Outfits Inspired By Bollywood Movies

Dress like Bollywood actors to dance to the endless Holi songs this year.

The Indian festival of Holi commonly referred to as the ‘festival of colours’ or the ‘spring festival’ is celebrated annually in our country. It is observed on the day of the full moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna, which this year, falls on March 8, 2023. Holi, which signals the end of winter and the beginning of spring, stands for a fresh start and the triumph of good over evil.

During Holi, people of all ages come together to sing, dance, play with coloured powders, exchange food and make memories. The festival is a time for forgiving, sharing love and happiness, and setting aside past wrongs. People visit friends and relatives, trade gifts, and have fun.

People from all communities and religions come together to celebrate Holi with great zeal and enthusiasm as a celebration of diversity and unity. It's a moment to set differences aside and unite in celebration of life, love, and joy. Here are 5 outfit ideas for this year’s Holi parties that are curated after taking inspiration from Bollywood.

Holi outfits inspired by Bollywood movies

1. Rekha in Silsila

Rekha is the undisputed queen of Bollywood, having proved to be timeless. Rekha's traditional white attire during Holi in Yash Chopra’s Silsila, still remains to be one of Indian cinema's most recognisable aesthetics. Rekha donned a fitting churidar-kameez in white for the Holi song ‘Rang Barse’ and it has become a dress that has stuck in everyone's memory three decades after, making it a timeless Holi outfit.

2. Deepika Padukone in Ram Leela

You would agree that Deepika’s Holi attire in Ram Leela was traditional, comfortable, and unique. Deepika Padukone chose a white lehenga skirt with a tonne of embroidery and wore it with a choli and dupatta in a contrasting colour. This look is very easy to put together with a little bit of planning. Choose oxidised bangles, an anklet, and bold earrings for your accessories. If you have a Holi costume party to go to, this Holi outfit is one you can easily replicate.

3. Deepika Padukone in Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani

If Indian outfits are not your thing and you want to just feel comfortable while you splash around with colours, take a cue from Deepika and go for a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Simplicity always wins and Deepika’s Holi outfit in this scene is proof of that.

4. Sara Ali Khan in Love Aaj Kal 2

Sara Ali Khan was seen rocking a chikankari suit in the film. A simple Lucknowi chikankari suit can go a long way and makes for great Holi ethnic wear as well. Whether you’re planning to wear it for a Holi party or for the Holi puja, a day before. And, you can get a chikankari almost anywhere now due to the popularity of the embroidery.

5. Alia Bhatt in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya

Not a Holi song, but the title track of the film, Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya has a scene where Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt are playing with colours. Almost as if it's Holi. And, that's when Alia is seen wearing a bright yellow outfit which is the perfect vibrant complement to Holi colours. Consider a bright yellow lehenga for a Holi party and if you’re feeling up to it, pair it with a mangtika.

6. Alia Bhatt in 2 States

A top with spaghetti straps will always be fashionable and since you’re going to have colour all over you anyway, a spaghetti top with any bottoms of your choice is the perfect way to ensure you have fun and remain comfortable wearing this Holi outfit. You can scene Alia Bhatt wearing exactly that as a college student in the song, ‘Offo’ from the movie 2 States. It's the ideal Holi outfit to wear if you're celebrating the festival casually with a group of friends.

7. Priyanka Chopra in Waqt

Be like Priyanka and wear a light pink suit. It will be pretty and perfect as your Holi outfit whether you’re celebrating with family or friends or heading out for one of those large Holi parties in your city. It’s great as Holi ethnic wear and you’ll be in the apt Holi costume when the DJ plays, ‘Do me a favour let’s play Holi…’

Holi is a joyful occasion celebrated all across the country. However, the chemicals in the coloured powders can harm your hair and scalp, so it can also be damaging. While there are ample Holi skincare and haircare tips to follow, ensure you at least practice a few basics. Oil your hair before you step out to play with colours. And, preferably cover to tie your hair in a plait or a bun to avoid damage.

You must also try to celebrate Holi using organic colours to safeguard yourself from toxins. Additionally, do check out our list of effective post and pre-Holi tips on our website.
