This Is How Men Will Set Fashion Trends In 2024

Straight from ace designers and labels, we’ve distilled the trends you should be wearing in the new year.

If one idiosyncrasy came alive through menswear in 2023, it was clothing as armour. Innovative yet individualistic pieces designed to shield the wearer and take on the modern world with confidence. But there were warring influences that split wardrobes across the land. For the abundance of exuberant prints and patterns, there was the sharp tailoring undercurrent that has buoyed the market for decades. Even the most normcore trend of them all—denim—got a jolt of personality.

Celebrity outings, too, were anchored in this punchy fashion vocabulary. We got Ranveer Singh’s campiest looks, from his satin suits to maximalist co-ord sets, preceded by Harry Styles adopting superlative androgynous ensembles. Then the #IndiaProud ethos espoused by south stars at the Oscars 2023.

With the new year closing in, there’s an inevitable impulse to get your arsenal up to speed. So we outlined the major men's fashion trends for 2024—a few cult favourites, a few calculated risks and a few complete jaw-droppers—according to the pros.

Emergence of effortless elegance

“I see relaxed yet glamorous androgynous styles and silhouettes taking the spotlight in the coming year. Think flamboyant trousers, statement-making bomber jackets and sharp blazers that blur the gender lines. Speaking of fabrics, it will be all about balancing comfort with style, with a nod to one’s roots. So, we’re sure to see linen-khadi blends, plaids and silks growing in popularity in 2024. The classic route will also trickle down to the colours worth bookmarking in the new year. While the classics like onyx black and ivory white will always be in style, I think bold palettes are about to have their moment too,” predicts Monica Shah of Jade by Monica & Karishma.

Let there be synchronicity

Style is all about defying expectations, and 2024 will be no different, says Jatin Malik behind Jatin Malik Couture. “First up is the tone-on-tone triumph. Picture this: an ensemble that harmoniously blends shades with perfect harmony. It's like a fashion symphony where every note is played in unison, creating a masterpiece of style. Adding depth and character to clothes, textured textiles will make a huge comeback. High collar garments will also be back in the limelight, proving that fashion is cyclical,” he elaborates.

Travel back in time with timeless tailoring

Speaking of ceremonial wear, “Impeccable construction and reinvented classics will be the main theme running through the narrative of an outfit and also its storytelling,” shares Piyush Mohnani, director, Asuka. “The biggest 2024 menswear trend will be an ‘old money’ musing on tailoring—think roaring ‘20s English vibe. Our latest, most desirable iterations for black tie occasions come in the form of classic double-breasted suits, open double-breasted jackets and overlapping blazers. I strongly suggest subtle checkered and pinstriped versions. These retain the sanctity of time-honoured tailoring yet infuse a contemporary edge to your look. At Asuka, we are trading conventional trousers in favour of Gorkha pants, featuring a high-waist, broad waistband, front pleats and bell bottoms. Colour calling-wise, blue and violet will be the new black for the new season,” adds Mohnani.

Think out of the box

Varun Bahl is observing grooms making more sentimental sartorial decisions. “2024 will definitely mark the year of contemporary silhouettes with experimental elements for grooms-to-be. You can expect innovative cuts, unexpected details, and unique fabrics, adding a modern flair to traditional menswear. Vibrant patterns, bold colours, and statement embroideries would also remain in focus, giving grooms a way to express and embrace their individuality. The role of sustainability in men’s fashion is also expected to increase, with a significant focus on eco-friendly materials and ethical fashion practices,” says couturier Varun Bahl.

Warcore will garner attention

“The modern shapes draw inspiration from military aspects, blending dark olive and green tones with metallic embellishments for a bold and striking appearance. In contrast, the introduction of metallic elements will give classic charm a contemporary spin. This inclusion of metallic elements and military-inspired elements combines tradition and modernity, resulting in a distinctive and captivating fashion narrative,” reveal Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra of Shantnu & Nikhil, known for their egalitarian approach to menswear.

The resurgence of elevated detailing

It’ll be hard to overstate the impact of intricacies in 2024. “When it comes to black tie, God is in the elevated elements. Our latest ceremonial outing taps into Asuka’s signature tropes—luxurious fabrics and flawless fits juxtaposed with new-era detailing. This season, we are reinterpreting lapels in a big way. Shawl lapels on evening wear jackets are as swaggering and sophisticated as they come. Square-cut lapels will also be the next big thing in the new year. The idea is to opt for detailing that doesn’t vie for attention yet speaks volumes. We have emblazoned these lapels not just on blazers but also waist coats,” elaborates Piyush Mohnani.

Inject some glamour

“This wedding season centres around using opulent fabrics and intricate details to offer a sharp and glamorous experience. For men, the selection of lavish fabrics and the integration of extravagant prints and textures elevate their look, creating a bold and memorable statement. Overall, this season is all about donning luxurious fabrics with signature detailing, to give it a sartorial and glamorous feel. The key to achieving a sharp and sophisticated look will lie in layering,” add Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra.

The best of both worlds

“Shackets—the blend of shirts and jackets—will steal the show from traditional shirts, with soft layers taking centre stage. It's a style combination that the brand has perfected. The new year will be the effortlessly stylish era. Bid adieu to tight fits and welcome the ‘relax fit revelation’. This is the time to embrace comfort without sacrificing style. This also brings us to our hallmark look: the classic linen trench coat,” adds Malik.
