From the historical intrigue of Stone Town to the natural beauty of its beaches and forests, Zanzibar becomes the best mix of awe-inspiring and exhilarating attractions catering for every type of traveller. So, here’s a guide to some of the top places to visit in Zanzibar and things to do in Zanzibar.

Stone Town

A good way to begin your Zanzibar sightseeing is to spend some time in Stone Town. This mesmerising historical centre is a UNESCO site that will make you feel as though you have travelled in time. Everywhere you look, Zanzibar’s history is evident in the unusual mix of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European architectural styles, the coral stone buildings, and the intricately carved wooden doors. Hints of the dark facets of Zanzibar history are visible as well at the Old Slave Market, a grim reminder of the East African slave trade. Visiting the Anglican Cathedral, constructed on the site of the market is another interesting thing to do in Zanzibar.

Nungwi Beach

Nungwi Beach, which is situated in the northernmost part of Zanzibar, is one of the most gorgeous beaches in the world. Its powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters make it an incredible place to visit in Zanzibar for relaxation and adventure. The gentle sea on the beach makes for a great place for water things to do in Zanzibar such as diving and snorkelling. In addition, there are many beach bars and restaurants that offer fresh seafood, which can be accompanied by the breathtaking view of the setting sun over the ocean. The scene of the bonfire at this Zanzibar attraction becomes extremely popular in the evening and the beach transforms into a hotspot of the island for late parties and dances.

Prison Island (Changuu Island)

A fifteen-minute short boat ride from Stone Town takes you to Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island. This Zanzibar attraction was originally intended in the 19th century to imprison rebellious slaves, but then it became a quarantine station. Today, this place to see in Zanzibar is known for a vast population of Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over 100 years old and are kept in protected sanctuary on the island. These giant ones were a gift by the British governor of the Seychelles. Tourists can feed them and learn about the conservation efforts aimed at preserving this endangered species.

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park

If you are fascinated by the diversity of nature, you should visit Zanzibar’s Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. This lush rainforest is the zone of the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey, a rare and graceful mountain species that can be found only in this place. As you walk along the paths of the park in its mangrove forests and swampy areas, you may see bushbabies, Sykes’ monkeys, and different colourful birds. Moreover, guided tours are also available for Zanzibar sightseeing and to inform you about the ecosystem of the local nature presented in this tourist destination.

Spice Tours

If during your visit to Zanzibar, you did not go on a spice tour, you can’t say that you visited this place. Tours for Zanzibar sightseeing are usually held on one of the island’s numerous farms, where you can look at, try, and smell various spices such as cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla and others. Most of the guides are local and will explain the history of the spice trade in Zanzibar, and will demonstrate how they are grown, and harvested, and in what proportions they are used for culinary and medical purposes. Many tours include a cooking class where you can learn how to cook traditional Zanzibar meals using spices, which is one of the many popular things to do in Zanzibar.

Nakupenda Sandbank

A boat trip to Nakupenda Sandbank, a beautiful sandbar in the middle of nowhere just off the coast of Stone Town, is a must-see place to visit in Zanzibar. The name 'Nakupenda' means ‘I love you' in Swahili, and it’s easy to see why this place to see in Zanzibar is loved. This narrow strip of white sand is enclosed by turquoise waters, with shallow bays ideal for some of the things to do in Zanzibar like swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing. The sandbank appears and disappears with the tide, creating a fleeting paradise in the middle of the ocean. The sandbank is the perfect place to visit in Zanzibar for a seafood barbecue, topped off with fresh calamari, prawns and octopus, against a backdrop of beautiful views.

Kendwa Beach

Just south of Nungwi, Kendwa Beach is quieter than its northern neighbour. This is one of the best places to visit in Zanzibar for nice sunsets and less rough waters, perfect to just relax or swim. The beach is less affected by tides, so the water is always perfect for a dip. There are also some fantastic dive schools in Kendwa, all offering trips out to local reef sites for diving and snorkelling. In the evenings, this place to see in Zanzibar comes alive with vibrant nightlife, including the famous Full Moon Party held monthly at Kendwa Rocks.
