India, the country where yoga originated, has fostered and produced a number of famous yoga gurus whose teachings have influenced millions of people all over the world. These illustrious people have committed their lives to unlock the deep mysteries of yoga and have led many seekers on the enlightening journey of self-discovery. In this article, we honour well-known Indian yoga gurus by highlighting their distinctive contributions and the enduring legacies they have created within the yoga community.

Known for his innovative work in popularising yoga as a therapeutic practice, B.K.S. Iyengar is regarded as one of the most important yoga gurus of the 20th century. Iyengar developed a unique kind of yoga with a strong emphasis on alignment and accuracy that makes use of props like blocks, belts, and blankets to assist and deepen the practitioner's experience. He changed the way yoga is taught, making it approachable to people of all ages and physical abilities by emphasising precision and discipline.

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the creator of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, played a key role in popularising this vigorous and physically taxing form of yoga.
