When someone says Hyderabad, what’s the first thing that comes to your mouth… we mean mind? Is it the unparalleled Hyderabadi Biryani, the rich Haleem or the flavourful broth Nihari? Or is it the spicy Andhra delicacies such as Gutti Vankaya Kura (stuffed eggplant or brinjal curry) and Pachi Pulusu (tamarind curry-like stew)?

For one of Hyderabad’s most well-known citizens, it is a bit of both. Bollywood actor and producer Dia Mirza shares her most favourite food haunts in Hyderabad. Here’s Dia Mirza’s list of must-visit places to eat when you’re in the Telangana capital!

Where: Shah Ghouse and Paradise

As a child, I loved the biryani at Paradise. Ridiculously good and served in mammoth portions. Now I think Shah Ghouse restaurant has an edge because of its unique tender mutton pieces and the rice’s aroma, which transports you to a happy place with every spoon.

Both these restaurants had humble beginnings as small stalls selling tea and snacks. They have both grown to have multiple outlets in the city. You’ll always find them bustling with customers.

Where: The Nizam Club (club membership or affiliated club membership is required)

Lip-smacking Haleem is most commonly served during Ramzan or special occasions such as weddings. A lot of hard work goes into making this stew-like delicacy, but it’s well worth it because the taste is heavenly and is the best food to break your fast with.

Similarly, the Nihari in Hyderabad is spicy, delicious and full of flavour. Nothing can beat the Nihari and Haleem at The Nizam Club.

Where: Rayalaseema Ruchulu and Southern Spice

For authentic Andhra food, I head straight to Rayalaseema Ruchulu and Southern Spice. Both places make amazing Ulavacharu Kodi Pulao, Kodi Vepudu, Ragi Sangati and Andhra Igguru. Their thalis are popular as well, which offers great variety and is scrumptious.

Where: Charminar, Old City Area

Chai with Osmania Biscuits is a must-have on the streets of Hyderabad. Then there is dosa and idlis dunked in plenty of butter. Don’t miss the sweets and flavoured lassi, paya, sheermal and kebabs. Nihari from the streets is equally delicious!

The Charminar area is a popular tourist and shopping attraction. Of course, the street caters to your appetite too. The old city’s allure draws people interested in food walks, and the diversity you discover is amazing. You can eat all this and get a taste of the old-world flavours.
