<h2>About Gimlet</h2><p>A Gimlet has a medicinal origin, which then eventually turned into a recreational purpose. The English sailors in the 17th century largely suffered from scurvy on board, caused due to the lack of Vitamin C. It was a common illness during the time, and John Woodall, who was an English military surgeon recommended citrus fruits as a part of the ration that the sailors received. Thereafter, in 1747, James Lind, who was a Scottish surgeon organised clinical experiments which proved that citrus contains antiscorbutic elements. The consumption of citrus juice also made it evident to the sailors that through it they could prevent the illness. Rear Admiral Alan then asked for a regular supply of lemon juice on board, during a 23-week voyage to India in 1794, which in turn led to a decrease in the number of scurvy outbreaks among the sailors. 1800s onwards, the supply of citrus fruits became a part of the regular supply in the ships.<br>Once the benefits came to be widely known, the sailors began drinking lime juice as well as mixing it with their daily ration of gin. They began calling the drink ‘Limeys’. Scotland had a practice of preserving fruit juice with sugar instead of alcohol, and the product came in appealing packages under the name ‘Rose’s Lime Cordial’.
