About Black Forest Cake
The first printed recipe for Black Forest Cake dates to 1900 in Germany, and since then there have been many variations of the Black Forest Cake recipe, all of which are delicious. Traditionally, chocolate cake, cherries, whipped cream, and kirsch are used to make Black Forest cake
The traditional recipe for Black Forest cake calls for a chocolate sponge cake made with flour, sugar, eggs, and cocoa powder. The cake is then baked in the oven and left to cool. After cooling, the cake is cut into three layers and each layer is soaked with cherry brandy. Whipped cream is then placed between the layers and the cherries are placed on top. The cake is then decorated with chocolate crisps and maraschino cherries.
It is believed that the name Black Forest Cake is derived from the dense Black Forest, and that the chocolate sprinkles on the cake represent the forest itself.
In today's recipe, however, we will not be adding kirsch, but sugar syrup, which is readily available.
