1. Patralekhaa Paul: The contemporary bride
Over the last couple of days, social media has been rife with photographs from the wedding of Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa Paul. While they had a traditional Hindu ceremony, it was their white wedding look that ticked all the boxes of a millennial-friendly function. Patralekhaa opted for a silver and satin gown with a thigh-high slit. A Jade by Monica and Karishma couture piece, the corset and veil of the wedding gown is detailed with fine Kasab embroidery. The look was paired with contemporary style diamond jewellery. While through the night, we saw different versions of the look—with and without a veil, perhaps the most interesting was her donning a pair of white sneakers. Hey, if you’re not going to dance at your own wedding, who will!
2. Kareena Kapoor Khan: The heirloom bride
Back when Kareena Kapoor tied the knot with Saif Ali Khan in 2012, her choice of outfit was a breath of fresh air. In a world of OTT lehengas and their like, Kareena Kapoor decided to go with an heirloom sharara—no less one worn by her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore for her own wedding ceremony in 1962. The heritage outfit that featured a rust-orange kurta, sharara and dupatta was revived and given finishing touches by designer Ritu Kumar. So, if you’re all about sentimentality, use something that belongs to your family. You could also simply use an element of it—like a dupatta created out of your mother’s sari.
3. Dia Mirza: The handloom lover
If Bollywood ever needed a poster girl for handlooms, Dia Mirza would be a worthy contender. For her wedding, Dia Mirza seemed to take us back in time—you’d think you were looking at photographs from your parent's wedding album! The actor went with a rich 'Chokadi' Benarasi silk brocade by Raw Mango together with a matching blouse. The look was completed with an organza dupatta and polki jewellery accentuated with dazzling emeralds. If you too love handlooms, but are unconvinced about them for your wedding day, we hope Mirza’s look inspires you to take the plunge!
4. Priyanka Chopra: The red showstopper
While Dia Mirza and Priyanka Chopra both opted for red, their wedding looks couldn’t be any more different. If you’re the kind of bride who likes her share of glamour, sit up and take notes from PeeCee’s bridal files. For her pheras at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, the actor was seen in a flaming red Sabyasachi lehenga. Interestingly, the traditional red outfit actually had several western elements—it also featured French embroidery, hand-cut organza flowers and a contemporary style veil. A fine example of east-meets-west, rather befitting for a wedding spanning continents!
5. Anushka Sharma: Pretty in pastels
While Indian brides and red may go hand-in-hand, it may not necessarily be everyone’s cup of tea. If your taste is a little more demure, you can probably find inspiration from Anushka Sharma’s wedding ensemble. The actor—also dressed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee—was seen in a delicate, pale pink lehenga that was highlighted with intricate silk embroidery. Sharma was seen wearing heavy jadau jewellery featuring layered necklaces and a mathapatti. A fresh, charming finishing touch to the entire ensemble was no doubt the bunch of fresh hydrangeas in her hair.
6. Deepika Padukone: Vision in white
The charm of a white ensemble is unparalleled—as proved by Deepika Padukone at her wedding reception in Mumbai. The actor and her husband were seen in complementing ivory and gold ensembles. While it was Rohit Bal for Ranveer Singh, Padukone went with a timeless ivory chikankari sari by Abu Jani - Sandeep Khosla. The intricately-embroidered outfit was highlighted with sequins and crystals together with zardozi work, giving us a look to remember. While white is generally not associated with Indian weddings, given this outfit’s elegance, we suggest you bookmark it for a function like your sangeet or your reception.
7. Sonam Kapoor: The traditional bride
Being the fashionista that she is, all eyes were on Sonam Kapoor on her wedding day back in May 2018. However, despite her high-fashion choices otherwise, Kapoor opted for a traditional red lehenga for her own wedding. The ensemble designed by Ahmedabad-based designer Anuradha Vakil was handwoven and then later embellished with lotus motifs embroidered with real gold yarn. Stunning Rajasthani jewellery including layered necklaces and an ornate mathapatti rounded off her look. So, if Rajasthani princess or a traditional regal bride is your vibe, this look should be your go-to.
8. Rhea Kapoor: A statement ensemble
Trust Rhea Kapoor to make a sartorial statement, even if it’s her own wedding day. The stylist-cum-producer was seen sporting her favourite designer Anamika Khanna. The bridal outfit was a white chanderi sari with ornate metallic embroidery. Giving the traditional veil a ditch, Kapoor opted for a handmade vintage-style pearl veil. Befittingly, the bride wore uncut diamond jewellery designed by her mother, Sunita Kapoor. It was a look that was equal parts modern and traditional and perfect for a bride whose tastes veer towards the offbeat.
