Founded in 696, St. Peter’s Abbey is one of the world’s oldest monasteries, serving and housing monks for at least 1000 years. The Abbey is also home to Austria’s oldest library, which has one of the most incredible collections of ancient manuscripts. Also known as the Archabbey of St. Peter, it is called the spiritual heart of the city such is its sacredness. The Abbey also has a network of catacombs underneath the floor.
