<p>There’s nothing like being up in the air in a brightly-coloured balloon, gliding through the sky while enjoying the sunrise. The thrill and excitement are manifold if you happen to be floating over Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India. I am part of the first-ever hot air balloon festival organised by Uttar Pradesh Tourism and executed by E-factor Entertainment.  </p><p>But before I took in the thrill of flying I spent some time exploring life around the famous ghats of Varanasi. The fact that it was Dev Deepavali, one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, only added to the fervour. The ghats were decked up with hundreds of oil lamps dancing gently in the evening breeze amidst sounds of conch shells blowing, the smell of incense sticks, the clang of cymbals, and the rhythmic chants of Har Har Gange. It’s a sight to behold. I ended my evening with a serene boat ride on the Ganga followed by a lip-smacking dinner at Fort Guleria, a magnificently restored 18th-century riverfront hotel.      </p><h2>Up, up and away I go! </h2><p>For someone like me who doesn’t have a single adventurous bone in her body, the idea of being in a small basket in the sky is a bit daunting. What if a sudden storm or gust of wind tosses my balloon into oblivion? There is no seatbelt, lifejacket, or parachute on hand. There’s not even going to be a well-groomed routine pointing out the nearest emergency exit.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Me-just-before-entering-the-basket_1637477270436.jpg"></figure><p>Nonetheless, I am up and ready for my exploit before the crack of dawn at 4:30 am. Why 4:30? Hot air balloons fly at times of day when the winds are least and the air is stillest. That includes early morning as well as later in the day before dusk. Any flights in between those hours are uncommon. “Strong winds are not good for hot air ballooning. A heavy gust can cause the balloon pilot to lose control of the vessel. You could go careening into trees and other sharp obstacles that can pop the balloon. Landings might be rougher, which can cause injuries. There is less wind in the early hours of the morning,” explain Hitesh, our pilot. If you are nervous about hot air ballooning (like me), an early morning flight is best. That way you won’t have much time to think about it. Your brain and body are still waking up and anxieties don’t get a chance to take hold.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><p>Much before take off it’s interesting to watch the crew unload the wicker basket from a trailer and spread the giant balloon (now flat) across the damp field like a picnic blanket. It is then inflated with the help of a motorised fan. The last step is the pilot setting off the jets to fire up the balloon, as excited passengers gather around the basket to capture the scene on their phones. It’s exhilarating, to say the least.  </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_View-of-the-hot-air-balloons-from-a-boat-in-Varanasi_1637477388787.jpg"></figure><p>Finally, when the moment arrived to step in and the basket lifted gently off the ground, I was pleasantly surprised with how gentle the take-off was. No wobble or even a tremor. Just a surreal, dreamlike flotation that teases us away from the earth. After waving at the crowd that had gathered to watch us fly and taking countless photos of the now dwindling landscape, I finally settle to appreciate the unobstructed panoramic views of the ghats in all their undisturbed beauty. The stunning temples, picturesque villages, and sweeping greenery make you appreciate how vast and vivacious Varanasi really is. And when the sun’s first rays set the waters of Ganga aglow it’s impossible not to feel moved by the beauty. I almost felt like a celebrity waving out to the kids and elders gathered on their terraces to catch a glimpse of the mysterious flying basket.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><p>After almost 30 minutes of enjoying the views and pointing out to distant landmarks my time in the sky was coming to an end and the pilot began scouring for a suitable place to land. While I was busy gripping the ropes in the basket and bracing for a bumpy landing the balloon planted itself in a barren field with nothing more than a little jolt. And just like that my first hot air balloon ride came to an end.  </p><p><strong>NOTE:</strong> Hot air ballooning in Varanasi will be conducted as an annual affair in the winter months. Prices will range between Rs 12,000 and Rs ,15,000 approx. Currently, there are hot air ballooning opportunities in Pushkar, Goa, Agra and Meghalaya. </p><figure class="table"><table><tbody><tr><td><h2>Tips for your first hot air balloon ride</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Varanasi-Balloon-Festival-%28not-my-picture%29-jpeg_1637477462520.jpg"></figure><ul><li>Be prepared for rescheduling. Hot air ballooning is totally dependent on the weather. If it’s raining or the wind is too strong, your flight can be cancelled.</li><li>Baskets come in varying sizes and can accommodate anywhere between 4 to 12 people. The ride I was on had eight people and just enough space for manoeuvring, but not much. It's best to find your spot and stick to it. The pilot rotates the balloon so that everyone gets a full 360-degree experience.</li><li>You can wear whatever you’d wear on the ground as it’s not cold or windy when you go up in the balloon. The flames from the burner will keep you sufficiently warm even if it’s a cold day.</li><li>There is some bit of climbing to get into the basket. So avoid short skirts, short dresses or anything that would be a hindrance.</li><li>Lastly, don’t be so focused on getting photos and videos that you forget to look at the scenery unfolding outside the basket.</li></ul></td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

This often-overlooked destination, situated at the tip of western Gujarat in India, is home to wonders yet to be discovered, stories waiting to be told, and landscapes that could leave you mystified. </p><p>The arid lands of Kutch summon those who do not wish to walk around with maps—those who are open to losing their way and, in turn, discovering something divine. Perhaps, a deeper connection with the place, its people, and above all, with self. The secret to this rewarding experience partly lies in bonding with the compassionate and warm villagers over a cup of tea or a homemade meal of <i>rotlas </i>(flatbread), <i>kathol nu shaak </i>(pulses), khichdi (a rice and lentil dish), and <i>chaas </i>(buttermilk). They will make you feel at home, enthusiastically narrate local tales and folklore, and even take you to some hidden gems most tourists haven’t yet had the pleasure of visiting.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Kutch_Kaliya_Dhrow_1637920727356.jpg"><figcaption>© Shutterstock</figcaption></figure><p>One such interaction led Varun Suchday to Mamai Dev Kaliya Dhrow, a natural landscape where history and nature collide so beautifully that one is almost left speechless. A Kutchi by birth and a nomad at heart, Suchday often takes the road less travelled to explore the unknown and understand a little more about his homeland with each passing day. During the Covid-19 lockdown last year, he frequently visited the nomadic herders and tribal villages of Kutch to ensure they had adequate food and other daily supplies. "I was spending a lot of my time with the Jatt and Gujjar communities. One day, I heard them talking about a certain “kotaro”--a Kutchi word for rock formations sculpted by wind and water. Their whispers left me feeling a bit curious. Upon asking, they insisted I visit Kotaro some time and see for myself. Each time I inquired about the way to Kotaro, I was suggested a different route. I guessed that there wasn’t just one access point or a road that led me straight to Kotaro. I pinned it down to several villages like Medisar Gaam, Mai No Pat, Tharavada and Vatachad. When my friend offered his motorcycle for my wanderings, I left for one of the villages that were said to be close to my end destination. Obviously, my attempt was unsuccessful. In fact, I made two futile attempts that didn't lead me anywhere. For two long hours, I kept riding on the dirt road in circles and ended up losing my way back. On my third attempt, I finally came across a local who was on his bike and asked him '<i>Kotaro kada hai?</i>' which means 'Which way is Kotaro' in Kutchi language. He was quick to point his finger and show me the way. After riding through rustic farmlands, I finally made it to the topmost point of Kotaro or Mamai Dev Kaliya Dhrow. And what I witnessed in front of me was absolutely mesmerising!," says Suchday who is also involved in grassroots tourism development.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>The Grand Canyon of India</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Kaliya-dhrow-inside-image2_1637674351951.jpg"></figure><p>Often referred to as the Grand Canyon of India, Mamai Dev Kaliya Dhrow is located around 35 kms from Bhuj, the capital of the former princely state of Kutch. It is mainly a landscape of gorges—narrow valleys between hills, typically with steep rocky walls and water flowing through them—revealing millions of years of geological history. </p><p>"For several minutes, I couldn't take a step forward and stood there staring at the landscape. I fell on my knees and tears started rolling down my eyes," says Suchday who visited the site sometime in July 2020 when monsoon was at its peak in Kutch. The rainy season is when the rocks are washed clean by rainwater and the site adorns a completely new avatar. Rocks wearing variegated shades of sunset colours like rust, crimson, dusty pink, purple, and sienna turn vibrant—and ample little waterfalls and emerald hills enliven the landscape. One can spot fish trying to fly upstream. Picture an enchanting place that looks straight out of a fairy tale!</p><h2>Carved by nature</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Kaliya-dhrow-inside-image3_1637674362365.jpg"></figure><p>Mahesh Thakkar, professor of geology and head of Department of Earth and Environmental Science at KSKV Kachchh University believes Kaliya Dhrow is one of the most spectacular geomorphic features in Kutch for its natural carvings created by seasonal water on the rocky river bed. "The rivers of Kutch are largely seasonal; rivers that have bare rocks exposed on the river beds. Moreover, Kutch geological basin is a seismologically-active region. Hence, rocky landscapes frequently experience uplifts or subsidence due to tectonic disturbances leading to changes in the base levels over a course of time. These changes lead to rivers turning violent, leading to carvings and erosion, and the resulting formation of gorges and narrow rocky cliffs. There are also sudden changes in elevation and occurrence of waterfalls at many places," says Thakkar.  </p><p>The topography of Kutch is unique as it has evolved as a result of several phases of tectonic movements since the Late Jurassic period. "Kalia Dhrow is situated on the banks of Nirona River and geologically cut across the Jhuran and Bhuj formation somewhere between middle Jurassic to late Cretaceous ages. Potholes, runnels as well as incisions in the river channel are some of the attention-grabbing features here. The present topography of the area is a result of changes in river dynamics and monsoonal conditions as well as lithology of the deposits," explains Dr. Subhash Bhandari, head of Department of Archeology, KSKV Kachchh University.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><p>Impressive colours and variations of rock outcroppings add an element of mystery to Kaliya Dhrow and make you want to know more about the geologic record exposed here. "The river cutting across alternate layers of shale and sandstone of Jhuran formation topped by thick, massive deposits of sandstone of Bhuj formation has shaped the present landscape, giving it a rugged appearance. The Jhuran formation which comprises alternate layers of shale and sandstone shows coloration ranging from yellowish orange to blue which is a result of the deep marine environment that has altered over time. Different levels of carbon, weathering as well as a wide variety of minerals have led to coloration changes of the shale. The varying carbon and oxygen levels result in oxidation of shale causing rusting and chemical weathering," explains Bhandari.</p><h2>Legends of the gorge </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Kaliya-dhrow-inside-image4_1637674374246.jpg"></figure><p>There are numerous myths and legends about this place that the locals still believe to this day. According to ancient legend, Kaliya Dhrow, surrounded by a sleepy jungle, was earlier a major source of water for thirsty travellers. This was because the gorge used to be filled with water throughout the year. Moreover, the rock formations at Kaliya Dhrow resembled a chain. Chain, when translated to the Gujarati language, is "Kadi" and the feeling of contentment one experiences after sipping water could be translated to the word "Dhrow" in the Kutchi language. Hence the name, Kaliya Dhrow.<br>There is another story behind the rather unusual name Mamai Dev Kaliya Dhrow. It says that Maheshwari Samraday's 4th Saint Mamai Dev's grandson had sacrificed his bracelet in a little water body at Kaliya Dhrow. Typically, when saints achieve a state of spiritual awakening, they transfer their energy or art onto a bracelet which is known as "kado" in the Gujarati language. When they are nearing their end, they either place the bracelet under a God's statue or sacrifice it in a river or a water body only to make sure the bracelet doesn't fall in the wrong hands or get damaged in any way. Some villagers also believe that Kaliya Dhrow is a God-made home for crocodiles.</p><p>Mamai Dev Kaliya Dhrow remained somewhat hidden until it appeared on the "52 Places to Love in 2021" list created by an American daily newspaper after reviewing 2,000 entries from around the world. "I share a strong emotional connection with Kutch. It isn't because I live here but because I truly appreciate and admire the magic it offers to a traveller. When I visited Mamai Dev Kaliya Dhrow, I realised the place has a unique energy. It was similar to what I experienced at Valle Sagrado de los Incas in Cusco, Lake Zaovine in Serbia and Habana Vieja in Cuba. These places have an aura that lights up your soul. I wanted the world to know about it. When I got to know that an international newspaper was making a list of unseen, inspiring places one could explore around the world, I wrote to them about Mamai Dev Kaliya Dhrow," says Suchday who states that around 30 to 40% of Kaliya Dhrow still remains totally obscure. "There is a stretch where one can find mushroom-shaped rocks similar to those at a site on the Colorado River in Arizona river in the United States," adds Suchday.  </p><p>Today, locals from different parts of Kutch visit this spot, but it is yet to receive the attention it deserves. “Tourism in Kaliya Dhrow could prove to be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it could give rise to work opportunities for the locals from the surrounding villages, and on the other hand put enormous stress on local land use, leading to increased pollution and natural habitat loss," says Ketan Maheshgiri Goswami who curates local travel experiences in Kutch.  "There was a time when there was no sign of humans at Kaliya Dhrow. Today, it has many visitors but they are mainly locals. Very few people outside of Kutch are aware of this other-worldly sight. A sunrise trek is a great way to soak up the beauty of Kaliya Dhrow," adds Goswami. </p>

<p><i>Jade green or perhaps olive green? No, this has got to be juniper green! Wait, it is simply called tea tree green? I am at a tea estate after all...</i></p><p>My mind was swarming with appellations and adjectives attempting to help me decide upon what exact shade of green my eyes were trying to process. But I guess that’s what happens to us, city-seasoned, ‘indefinitely locked down' folk when suddenly confronted with their very own ‘50 Shades of Green'fantasy. One that certainly left me gobsmacked with the lush beauty of Upper Assam’s famed tea country.</p><p>All this, with the occasional crimson red burst of a flowering Gulmohar tree preening in all its pre-autumnal glory. Like an impressionist Monet painting, its image is reflected in the waters of an ancient tank, carpeted with fuchsia pink lilies and pale purple water hyacinth.</p><h2>Tea and history</h2><p>It was a cool mid-September morning when I found myself at the Attabarrie Tea Estate. An old colonial estate, set amidst ancient tombs and tanks, built centuries ago by the powerful Ahom kings of this region of Upper Assam. Today, India’s premier tea producing stronghold, this part of Assam lies on the fertile south banks of the mighty Brahmaputra, India’s only male named river. </p><p>I was looking at a vacation to immerse myself into a few of the tea estates’ agrotourism offerings and learn about the region and its world-class teas. Especially, the black tea variety that is abundantly produced here. The old tea estates of Assam, which were all set up during the British Raj, are awe-inspiring not just in terms of their magnitude, but also how the tea industry and nature coexist in the most wondrous ways. The resulting product is a fantastic cup of tea. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Attabarrie_Tea_Estate__1__1636975861105.jpg"></figure><p>Today, a part of the prestigious Kolkata-headquartered <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.luxmitea.in/">Luxmi Group</a> that owns several magnificent tea estates in Assam, Tripura, and West Bengal—with recent forays in places as unique as Rwanda in East Africa, the Attabarrie Tea Estate is not just one of India’s largest estates, but one of the oldest too and a place steeped in time.</p><p>Located close to the town of Demow, the estate’s main factory building, Shiv temple, and Burra bungalow flank three sides of a huge 337,500 sq ft. tank. This water body was dug out during the reign of AhomKing Sukampha in the late 16th century, who is also known as 'KhoraRoja’, or Lame King. This moniker was bestowed upon him after a fall from his elephant left him with a damaged foot. </p><p>AlsoRead0</p><p>The original name of the king’s estate was Athabarrie in honour of the gum trees whose resin was used to lodge precious gemstones into pieces of the royal jewellery collection. It was changed to Attabarrie when the British took over it and turned it into a tea estate in 1864. Interestingly, till today four British-era tea leaf sorting machines manufactured by Middleton and McIntosh are very much in use at the factory.</p><h2>Down to the T!</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_IMG20210924091130_1636975971913.jpg"></figure><p>As part of its new thrust in the direction of agrotourism—replete with guesthouse stays, factory tours, and tea tasting—estate manager Shantanu Roy personally took me around the gargantuan estate. All the while explaining everything related to the production of tea—leaf to cup—in the greatest detail. </p><p>Upon entering the first division (as blocks of the tea tree growing parts of the estate are called), I encountered rows upon rows of three feet-high tea bushes that were in the process of being divested of their crowning glory aka the needle-like bud and two leaves by scores of singing women (and a few men, too!) who knew exactly what to snap off and what not to.</p><p>Adorned with nylon mesh bags strapped to their foreheads to catch the leaves, they merrily made their way from bush to bush, stopping to take sips from plastic bottles, the contents of which looked unfamiliarly yellow and muddy. This, I was told, was a concoction of tea leaves water, and salt; designed to stave off the dehydrating effects of being out in the sun for too long.</p><p>Back at the rather modest on-site factory, I was taken through the entire leaf to cup process, after the plucked leaves were brought in. Following a motorised, fan-assisted dying process called withering, the clean leaves were chopped to an almost mulch-like consistency and left to oxidise. This was important as when the leaves ferment and turn progressively darker, they start to take on that typical tea colour while being imbued with strength and briskness. </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><p>After drying and processing, the leaves were then cleaned, sorted, and sent off to the packaging section of the plant. Expecting a much more high-tech packaging operation, I was a little surprised to see a very basic lot of packaging machines dispense the tea into large sacks ready to be trucked to Guwahati and Kolkata for the famous tea auction.</p><h2>What’s CTC and orthodox tea</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_IMG20210923110929_1636975956998.jpg"></figure><p>I was also privy to the very painstaking grading process where the different varieties of tea from the estate such as the basic <a href="https://zeezest.com/food/this-is-the-chai-patti-that-binds-india-734">CTC (crush, tear and curl)</a> and the more premium export quality full leaf orthodox tea are sorted out and tasted before being specially packed. Somewhat similar to traditional wine tasting, one is meant to see, sniff and then slowly sip the ‘liquor tea’, devoid of the de rigueur milk and sugar additions, while giving it a swirl in one’s mouth to open its bouquet of tasting notes.</p><p>Post a yummy Assamese lunch at Mr Roy’s beautiful <i>mati</i>-style bungalow, I got to sample a whole range of special CTC and orthodox teas that the estate and group produces. In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his visit to the UK in 2015 chose the brand’s tea as a gift for Her Royal Highness which was called the Queen Elizabeth Blend.</p><p>As a parting shot, I was handed a small glass of an experiment Mr Roy was working on—homemade tea wine produced from just the prized bud of the tea plant, sugar, yeast, and distilled water. Two words: scrumptious and potent!</p><h2>Agro-tourism at Moran tea estate </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Moran_Tea_Estate__7__1636975894617.jpg"></figure><p>Earlier that morning, I had taken a quick 25-minute ride along the National Highway 37 to get here from my base at Attabarrie's sister estate—the equally impressive Moran Tea Estate. This mammoth estate covers 1092 acres of land housed in the eponymous town of Moran, which itself is a short one hour’s drive from Dibrugarh’s Mohanbari Airport, along the same highway.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Moran_Tea_Estate__8__1636975906063.jpg"></figure><p>Another emerging agrotourism destination—with its colonial-style guesthouse bungalows featuring cosy fireplaces and huge verandas—the historic Moran Tea Estate was set up by the British also in 1864. Belonging to the most prestigious tea-growing belts in the richest tea region of Assam, the Moran Tea Estate is known not only for its focus on quality, but also for good environmental stewardship and ethics. Besides the fact that the estate grows some of the finest teas in all of Assam, the estate, like Attabarrie is also home to medieval tanks and tombs built by the Ahom kings that stand testament to the time before the British Raj. </p><p>AlsoRead2</p><h2>Must-visit sites in Upper Assam </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_IMG20210924131234_1636976004179.jpg"></figure><p>Once you’ve had enough of tea and agrotourism and wish to play the role of a 'regular tourist', this region of Upper Assam is filled with other places of interest as well. One such example is the 4.94 km long Bogibeel Bridge, believed to be Asia’s longest and one that fords over the Brahmaputra river, linking the Dibrugarh and Dhemaji districts. </p><p>The other very important destination is farmhouse the ancient Shiivite town (and former Ahom Kingdom capital) of Sivasagar. With agriculture accounting for 26% of the country’s GDP, the potential for agrotourism is huge. Here’s our pick of some Indian festivals that take place only in the winter months and allow you to savour unique and varied cultural experiences. Take your pick from a kaleidoscope of music, art, dance, traditional and modern festivities that we witnessed first-hand.</p><p>Here are nine winter festivals in India you can’t miss:</p><h2>1. Rann Utsav, Kutch, Gujarat</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_rann-utsav_1637674730233.jpg"></figure><p>When we first set our eyes on the never-ending stretch of white sand, we could just stare in awe. Despite the camel-drawn carts full of tourists, if you walk a distance, you will find you’re in a quiet expanse of the white salty dessert. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.rannutsav.com/">Rann Utsav</a> celebrates this unique landscape along with the flavour of its people and their craft. The Tent City in Dhordo, which is 85km or 1 hour 45 minutes away from Bhuj, is usually where all the action is. You can also visit the unique Wild Ass Sanctuary in the Little Rann of Kutch.</p><p>We must recommend you take the time out to explore the unique art of Rogan and the only family in the world that practices it, in the village of Nirona. The village gained publicity when PM Narendra Modi gifted US President Barack Obama an exquisite piece of Rogan, originating from Persia many centuries ago. It is created free-hand using special paint, made using oil from castor seeds, mixed with pigments of the castor plant, but looks as if it was embroidered or printed. Although this art form was practiced by various families in Nirona and some nearby villages, today a lone family of the Khatri brothers headed by Gafoorbhai Khatri, guards the secret to this art form and keeps it alive. </p><p>We also visited Gandhi Nu Gam, which was devastated in the 2001 earthquake and then painstakingly reconstructed. The artisans’ homes, traditional bhungas (mud huts) are decorated with brightly painted murals on the outside and mirrors on the inner walls, and embroidery and woodwork are practiced there. The embroidery can be found on bed covers, cushion covers, dupattas, and dress materials. There are also beaded necklaces, armbands, embroidered purses, and wallets on offer. </p><p><strong>Dates</strong>: Nov 1, 2021 – Feb 20, 2022 </p><h2>2. Hornbill Festival, Nagaland</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_horn-bill_1637674756080.jpg"></figure><p>The sounds of Naga folk songs about lore and practices echo through the region. Majestic log drums are beaten in the background and the performers of the ‘War Dance’ take centre stage. The ceremonial garb of the dancers resembles that of the warriors. The audience at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, 12 kms away from Kohima, is left spellbound.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><p>Nagaland’s annual Hornbill Festival is a celebration of the indigenous tribes of Nagaland, showcasing a colourful spectacle featuring folk performances, sports and traditional ceremonies. As many as 16 tribes participate in the festival, which is named after the hornbill, a bird that finds a special place in tribal folklore. A variety of local handicrafts and handlooms are on display along with local food stalls. We recommend trying the rice beer. For the brave, there’s a Naga chilli eating competition too.</p><p><strong>Dates</strong>: December 1-10, 2021</p><h2>3. Christmas in Kolkata, West Bengal </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_kolkata-christmas_1637674769024.jpg"></figure><p>Kolkata winters are beautiful. It’s not devastatingly cold and there is a freshness to everything around. In December particularly, as the city gets ready to welcome Christmas (known locally as <i>Boro</i> <i>Din</i> or ‘Big Day’) it’s a great time to visit the city of joy. Park Street is decked with lights and festoons giving it an outdoor carnival setting. From live bands performing to food stalls selling homemade goodies, this open-air party has it all. </p><p>It’s very difficult to talk about any festivities in Kolkata without its mouthwatering food. Snaking queues at the city’s popular old haunts like Flury’s, Peter Cat, and Moulin Rouge aren’t unheard of. The menus at the local clubs take us back in time to what it must have been like during the British Raj. Another interesting place to find great homemade fare is at Bow Barracks. During Christmas, the residents put up stalls where you can buy homemade meatloaf, homemade wines, cookies, and cakes. Another favourite that you absolutely can’t miss is Nahoum’s, a Jewish bakery that has been around since 1902. Braving the mad rush in the store during Christmas is worth it; don’t miss the Mince Pies. Thank us later!</p><p><strong>Dates</strong>: December 20-25, 2021</p><h2>4. Theyyam performance, Kannur, Kerala</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_theyyam_1637674782232.jpg"></figure><p>A masked dancer enters the temple foyer to the sound of beating drums and a gaudily dressed priest performs the <i>arati</i> with fervour. The dancer is dressed in bright colours and has an overbearing headdress. The temple, in Kannur located in North Kerala, is packed, and devotees watch the ritual in awed silence. Of the many temples that Kerala has to offer, the Shri Muthappan Parassinikadavu temple is unique. This temple is dedicated to a hunter form of Lord Vishnu, Shri Muthappan, who was a meat eater and loved toddy. He is also believed to be secular and unbiased as he drank his toddy from the homes of the poor and lower caste people as well. People of all castes, religions and nationalities are permitted to enter the temple and participate in the worship. Fish and toddy are the offerings made to the lord even today in the temple.</p><p>The main mode of worship is not via idol worship but by ritual enactment of the Theyyam dance, performed every evening at the temple. After the performance, people queue up to make donations and seek blessings from the performer, who they believe, is possessed by the spirit of Lord Muthappan. He looks at the devotees and whispers into their ears, giving them a solution to their problems and predicting their future. He whispered in our ear too but since we don’t speak Malayalam and no one else was privy to this prophecy, I guess we’ll never know what the dancer said.</p><p><strong>Date</strong>: While there is no particular festival or time of the year to catch this performance. North Kerala is gorgeous in the winters.</p><h2>5. Poush Mela, Shantiniketan, West Bengal</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_paush-mela_1637674795122.jpg"></figure><p>On one of our visits, we saw a Baul singer dressed in his saffron robe, as he adjusted his cloth mat under a large Peepul tree. As we found a place to sit, the chattering of the crowd slowly died down and his fingers skillfully graced the <i>iktara</i> (one-string instrument). The sound of his rustic, earthy voice filled the air. </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><p>Come December, Shantiniketan is dressed in warm, festive colours. Home to Visva-Bharati University modelled on the gurukul system, the town is a hub for literature, music, dance, and fine art. It’s annually held Poush Mela is an event no art lover should miss. The six-day fair is known for its stalls selling handmade products and artworks and for live performances of Bengali folk music especially Baul music (Bauls are a group of mystic minstrels from Bengal, mainly belonging to the Vaishnava Hindu and Sufi Muslim communities.) The mela has been held continuously every year since 1894 except for two breaks during the Bengal Famine and the COVID-19 pandemic.</p><p><strong>Dates</strong>: December 24-26, 2021 (The fair officially lasts for three days, though vendors may stay until the end of the month)</p><h2>6. The Winter Carnival, Manali, Himachal Pradesh</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_SOlang_1637835429614.jpg"></figure><p>If you are looking for some snow served with a side of winter sports and a dash of Himachali culture, this is probably your best bet. Usually one of India’s most popular summer getaways, Manali leaves no stone or snowflake unturned to woo you in winter as well. At the Manali Winter Carnival over a hundred cultural tableaus and processions showcasing the local culture will take over the streets. Apart from dance, songs and local cuisine, you can dabble in winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding at Solang valley near Manali. The festival also hosts a ‘Winter Queen’ contest - a local beauty pageant that takes place at the open-air amphitheatre, in the middle of Manali town, in sub-zero temperatures. We drove to Vastrapur area in the old walled city where a thousand kites seemed to be flying in the clear blue sky. The sun was out but a cool breeze made the kites sway gracefully. Kite flying can get competitive where opposing teams try to fly higher and cut each other’s kites, sending them swiftly spiralling ground-wards. </p><p>The festival is also known as Uttarayan in Gujarat. An evening prior to the festival families purchase kites from master kite makers who prepare special designs every year for the festival. Patang (kite) Bazaar, is the biggest kite selling site in the city. In the week heading to the International Kite Festival, Patang Bazaar is open all 24 hours. When you are in the city, don’t forget to try Uttarayan special delicacies such as 'Undhiyu' and ‘Til Chikkis'.</p><p><strong>Date</strong>: January 14, 2022</p><h2>8. World Sacred Spirit Festival, Jodhpur, Rajasthan</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_world-sacred-spirit-festival_1637674824357.jpg"></figure><p>From Mongolian deep throat singers to dervishes, Qawalli, Folk, Bhajans, and modern music, set against the backdrop of two gorgeous forts, the World Sacred Spirit Festival is an absolute treat for the senses. Organised by the Mehrangarh Trust, the festival has two parts. The first three days of the festival take place at the Nagaur Fort. The setting is intimate and exclusive to visitors staying within the fort walls. Apart from witnessing the performances, one gets to chat with the artists and share ideas. Over the next three days, the festival moves to the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, where a larger audience gets to be a part of the festival. However, this year only the Nagaur leg of the festival will take place.</p><p>AlsoRead2</p><p>When we visited the festival a few years ago, we were treated to performances by artists from Iran, Egypt, China, Mongolia, Pakistan and India. Khajuraho Dance Festival, Madhya Pradesh</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Khajuraho-Dance-Festival_1637674845487.jpg"></figure><p>Skilled dancers from all over India, present their craft against the beautiful backdrop of the Khajuraho temples, a UNESCO world heritage site. Many of India’s traditional dance forms have a history of being performed in temple premises. Live performances of classical Indian forms including Odissi, Kathak, Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam are the highlights of the Khajuraho Dance Festival, which was first held in 2002.</p><p>If you stay on to visit the temple complex post the festival too, catch the spectacular Sound and Light Show. You are taken back in time with mythological stories and folklore. The music, the tales of kings and queens, the chanting of shlokas, and Amitabh Bachchan’s soul-stirring rendition of his father, late Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s poetry about Khajuraho’s sculptors, makes for an immersive experience. </p><p><strong>Dates</strong>: February 20-26, 2022</p><h2>10. Apart from being gorgeous in the rains and festive during Christmas and New Year, you must experience a different side of Goa during the Carnival. The carnival tradition was introduced by the Portuguese in the early 16th century and is celebrated before the fasting month of Lent. The four-day-long celebration commences on Saturday before Ash Wednesday and takes place in various parts of Goa including Panjim, Vasco da Gama, Margao, and Mapusa among others. </p><p>Dancing troupes, revellers wearing masks and costumes, live music, colourful processions featuring horse-drawn carriages, and decorated floats that are the highlights of parades, sports competitions and hedonistic pursuits like great food and drinking is what draws the crowds. When you take this train, you will also be at India’s highest railway station in Ghum. Another key highlight on this route is the Red Panda steam-hauled service from Darjeeling to Kurseong. This narrow-gauge train runs on steam-powered locomotives and stops at New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri, Sukna, Rangtong, Tindharia, Gayabari, Mahanadi, Kurseong, Tung, Sonada, Rongbull, Jorebunglow, Ghum, Batasia Loop, and Darjeeling. They traversed almost 2,200 kilometres of the heavily-forested state during this period. These sites include Sitamarhi-Harchoka, Ramgarh, Shivrinarayan, Turturiya, Chandkhuri, Rajim, Sihawa, Jagdalpur, and Ramaram.</p><h2>Significance of the nine destinations</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Jogimara-Caves%2C-Ramgarh-Picture-Credits---cfor36garh_1636554285792.jpg" alt="Ram vanvas "><figcaption>Jogimara Caves, Ramgarh © Cfor36garh</figcaption></figure><p>Each site has a special significance: Sitamarhi-Harchoka is the place where the trio entered Chhattisgarh and is also the site where Sita set up her kitchen. Ramgarh is home to the cave with an amphitheatre in which Sita had stayed; Shivrinarayan is where Shabri fed Lord Ram only sweet fruits from the <i>ber</i> tree; and Rajim is known for the confluence of the three rivers—Mahanadi, Sondur, and Pairi. Sihawa has seven mountains that are said to be the abode of Saptarishi; Jagdalpur marks the beautiful spot where Lord Shiva and Parvati came to meet Ram and Sita; Ramaram is where Lord Ram taught the people to worship the Mother Earth; Chandkhuri is the home of Mata Kaushalya, Lord Ram’s mother; and in Turturiya one can visit the ashram of Valmiki, the author of Ramayana. This is also the place where Lord Ram’s sons, Luv and Kush, were born.</p><h2>About the circuit</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Chattisgarh-Ram-Vanvas-Trail-inside-image-chitrakoot%20falls_1636554297105.jpg" alt="Ram vanvas "><figcaption>Chitrakoot Falls, Jagdalpur</figcaption></figure><p>“All the nine destinations will have uniform signages and similar gates leading to religious and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://zeezest.com/travel/top-10-historical-destinations-in-india-2228">historical sites</a>,” shares the Minister of Tourism, Tamradhwaj Sahu. The destinations will showcase traditional arts and crafts that will also be available to buy. He explains that although the journey of 2,200 kilometres can be covered in three to four days, he’d suggest spending 10 to 11 days to cover the circuit at leisure. “Ideally you should reach each destination by noon, see the sights and spend the night. It is the birthplace of Mata Kaushalya, Lord Ram’s mother and is considered to be his <i>nanihal</i> (maternal home). Mata Kaushalya Temple is the only temple in the world dedicated to her. According to folklore, Mata Kaushalya did not have any brothers—hence, she was considered the sister of Chhattisgarh. According to this relationship, Lord Ram becomes the <i>bhaanja </i>(nephew) of the entire state. So, he is fondly addressed here as Bhaanjaram. Taking this further, all <i>bhaanjas</i> hailing from the state are revered by their <i>mamas</i> (uncles). To this day, this is the only state in India where the uncles touch their nephews’ feet instead of the other way around, as is the norm in the rest of the country.</p><h2>The inaugural evening</h2><p>At the inauguration, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel performed a special <i>aarti</i> at the temple premises. After the <i>aarti</i> ceremony, he unveiled a 51-feet-tall sandstone statue of Lord Ram installed at the entrance of the temple, amidst spectacular fireworks that lit up the sky. Renowned artists like singer Shankar Mahadevan, vocalist Sukriti Sen, indie-folk music band Kabir Cafe and the famous folk-rock band Indian Ocean, along with other local acts, enlivened the inauguration of the circuit.</p><p>November to March is the best time to visit Chhattisgarh. Having kick-started the tourism season with this event, the state tourism board is gearing up for a series of festivals through the year. The end of this month will see the launch of the Tribal Festival that will showcase the colourful <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://zeezest.com/travel/ram-janmabhoomi-to-treta-ke-thakur-temples-in-ayodhya-you-must-visit-5108">tribal culture</a> of the state—from their varied dance forms and sporting events to their unique cuisine and crafts.</p>

<p>Don’t erase Agra from your travel list this year just because there’s nothing beyond a pristine monument to marvel at. Best known to the world for the resplendent Taj Mahal, Agra houses one of the seven wonders of the world—and is a city widely renowned for its notable historic significance. Agra, on the banks of the river Yamuna, has attracted emperors from the time of Sikandar Lodi and truly flourished as the epicentre of activity under the Mughals.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Agra-inside-image-2_1637310366012.jpg"></figure><p>Interestingly, though, there is more to Agra than what meets the eye. A city stuck in time, Agra is an awkward confluence of the old and the new. Look through the eyes of a resident, who has grown up in its by-lanes, and you see a city that still happily holds on to its past—and yet, almost begrudgingly adopts new-age developments.</p><p>“Personally, I don’t think Agra really needs a metro rail service, but it’s one for the future, so you never know,” says Tahir Ahmad, co-founder of Agra Heritage Walks. Ahmad has grown up in the old part of the city that hosts one of the three Jama Masjids of the Indian subcontinent. This was once part of the city perimeter of the great Mughal emperor Akbar, and therefore, was known as Akbarabad.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>A tale of two cities</h2><figure class="image image_resized image-style-align-left" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Tahir-Ahmed-of-Agra-Heritage-Walks_1637310379626.jpg"><figcaption>Tahir Ahmad, co-founder of Agra Heritage Walks</figcaption></figure><p>Agra Heritage Walks is an initiative that Ahmed conceptualised with his friends Kaleem, Neha and Anal—who’ve all grown up in Agra and were eager to change the dynamics in the way their city is perceived. “The city was divided into two—one was the tourist district which was beautiful and had every amenity and characteristics of a world-class city. And the other part of the city was the place where my home, the erstwhile Agra of the yore lay neglected,” Ahmed explains.</p><p>There is an innate charm in Ahmad’s storytelling. As he narrates a chunk of Agra’s history through some of the greatest poets this city has been home to, you realise how old Agra—the Akbarabad of olden days—is a time capsule. Generations of families, which have been here for centuries, reside in perfect comfort in lanes that literally give you no space. Yet, no one complains.</p><p>Their tales have seen the colonial era, mutinies, communities both united and at loggerheads. Yet, there’s harmony—almost as if the world forgot to take it along in its modernisation spree, and perhaps for good measure. For no matter how busy or aimless, rich or poor you are, you’d always find time to catch a breath here.</p><figure class="image image_resized image-style-align-left" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Agra-inside-image-5_1637310501607.jpg"></figure><p>You know each other, you live amidst history—even the walls of Akbar’s city, now over 500 years old, haven’t disappeared yet. It’s almost as if it’s holding its secrets in a tightly-clutched diary and yet hoping that there’d be readers to glimpse its tales. For no history, wars or swanky high streets can take away heritage, traditions, and <i>insaaniyat</i>.</p><p>“Sadly, it’s rare for people to look beyond the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort of Agra, when it has so much more to offer. It has the imprints of all the great Mughal rulers, leaving us with tremendous history and architecture. Agra has a rich tradition of culture, art and poetry, and all of this gives us endless city secrets and festivals to celebrate in our narrow lanes. Our idea was to bring all of this to attention,” Ahmad says.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>An Agra you’ve probably never seen before</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Agra-inside-image-1_1637310524085.jpg"></figure><p>You stop for a while to catch a breath and eat <i>kachoris</i> at a shop that was built in 1840. Run now by the sixth generation of the family, Lala Chinman Lal Poori Waale has seen the sepoy mutiny of 1857. You then proceed down the road to marvel at some of the most beautiful doors of Agra, and compare rafters and balconies from various eras. You then stop by to say hi to everyone, and eat some more.</p><p>Agra’s hidden treasures do not disappoint. This is a place run and ruled by the heart, telling tales you won’t forget in a hurry. If you want to run away from the crowd, there’s Rambagh—the first of many Mughal gardens built over time. Built by Babur, the first Mughal ruler, the garden gives you an early glimpse of what this empire built when it had few resources. Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandara, and of course the Taj Mahal, are examples of their craftsmanship at the peak of Mughal might.</p><p>In between, you find stories about Agra that you wouldn’t hear often. For instance, how Akbar’s church from 1599 was demolished as a sign to stifle Portuguese arrogance during Shah Jahan’s rule—to be built back in 1772. Or, perhaps how the Roman Catholic cemetery was built in the style of Islamic architecture due to it being established amid the Mughal rule, and hosting the grave of the first documented British citizen to be buried in the Indian subcontinent—John Mildenhall.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Agra-inside-image-3_1637310554290.jpg"></figure><p>Then, of course, there’s the food. From the taste of <i>bedmi pooris</i> (known as <i>bediya </i>in Agra) for breakfast and <i>tikki</i> burgers on your way back from work, to the aromas of <i>qorma </i>for dinner—followed by jalebis that Ahmad says would be a shame to the city, “if not had <i>garam aur karaara</i>.” As you lose yourself in the flavours of the city, you realise how it’s not just one thing — it’s everything that has come together to make you feel the way you do.</p><p>AlsoRead2</p><p>Ahmad’s efforts to preserve the heritage of his city have been joined by his friends, each of whom has brought something new to the table. While he began with the geopolitical history of Agra, Neha—his partner in these endeavours—brought to being a city walk that narrates the tales of the city from the eyes of women in the Mughal era. Others have helped establish a poetry walk, which looks across Agra from the eyes of the great poets that have resided here.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Agra-inside-image-6_1637310568809.jpg"></figure><p>“I wondered as a kid, “<i>iss sheher ke saare raste mere ghar kaise pahaunchte hain?</i> Even though the map of the old city has been etched in my mind since childhood, I still find it fascinating how I discover new things even today — every time I go out on my own to explore. It’s just beautiful,” Ahmad sums up aptly. None of this is to say that you mustn’t visit the Taj Mahal (because you absolutely should), but the next time you’re here, come see the grand old city through these sepia-tinted glasses. You’ll see what you’ve missed, after all this time.</p>

Waiting for us there, was Ruben Vasco da Gama, the current owner, and our host for the day. When our initial awestruck feelings settled a bit, we were taken by the thought of what a massive undertaking it must be to maintain a home like this. As we strolled through the vast hallways and rooms of the house, Ruben told us about its interesting history.</p><h2>Preservation of stories</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_IMG_3765_1636387182863.jpg"></figure><p>The house was built in 1787, by a Portuguese nobleman named Jose Paulo, who was the Dean of the Church and the founder of Quepem town. He arrived in Goa in 1779 along with the Archbishop, Dom Frei de Santa Catarina. He constructed this spacious house spread over 11,000 sq ft which he described, at the time, as a ‘farm house’. In 1829, he presented the Palácio do Deão to the Viceroys of India-Portuguese, for their recreation. When Jose Paulo passed away, after spending 55 years in Goa, the Palácio was occupied by a cleric. Around 1989, the house was given to some nuns to be run as a home for destitute women. It is said that they had a hard time keeping up with the maintenance of the house and, they too abandoned the house. Finally, it was decided to privatise it and open it up for public viewing. </p><p>That’s when Ruben and his wife Celia Vasco da Gama bought it and took over the mammoth task of its restoration, which took three years to complete and, in Rubens's words, is “still work in progress.” While Ruben is an engineer, he has been working in the field of restoration since 1992. Celia, a microbiologist, also took to cooking and spent a lot of time researching old Portuguese recipes. “We wanted the experience to be complete and give people a reason to travel all the way to come and see the house. Preserving heritage is important to us and so is giving back to the local community,” Ruben tells us.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><p>The architecture is an interesting blend of Hindu and Portuguese styles. “Traditionally the altar was always inside the house. In this house, however, you can see a Hindu influence, where just like the temple space in a Hindu house, the altar is right in the front area of the house,” Ruben explains. The house faces the Church that Jose Paulo built and is on the banks of the Kushavati River. The immaculately maintained gardens is home to a pond, balustrades (rows of small columns topped by a rail), and stone ornaments. There’s a library, with an interesting collection of books on Goan history, arts and crafts, and theology. There’s also a lovely open-sided gallery with a view of the river, where our meals are served. </p><h2>A Goan food story</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_IMG_3744_1636387118494.jpg"></figure><p>While the weather was responsible for making us hungry, Ruben gave us a disclaimer about this being a simple home-cooked meal and told us that it may not be ‘hotel like’. Some of the vegetables came straight from Ruben’s farm. The organic red rice is grown by them too as are the jamuns for the Jamun-fenny cocktail.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_starters_1636387130703.jpg"></figure><p>The starters arrived first. Rissois de Camarão, a Portuguese dish where half-moon-shaped savoury fried snacks are stuffed with shrimp. Crisp and light, the rissois were polished off almost as soon as they reached the table. The toast with brinjal pâté was unusual and delicious. Our favourite though was the stuffed crab, flavourful and cooked to perfection.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><p>The main course kept arriving relentlessly, one after the other. There was Ambadyachi Uddamethi- a sweet and sour, summery raw mongo curry, Bendi Curry (ladyfinger), Gosadi Baji (ridged gourd), French bean bhaji, the melt-in-the mouth Tamuso (red snapper) in garlic, a very Goan Prawns Chilli Fry and a savoury Pumpkin Pie. For dessert there was sliced pineapple, caramelized and soaked in alcohol. “Many of these recipes come from my mother and Ruben’s mother. Family and friends have contributed over the years as well. <p>It’s not easy to pick the perfect time to visit Kodagu (Coorg is the anglicised version). There’s a chilly nip in the air during the winter, while the mild temperatures in summer provide relief from the scorching heat dominating India’s big cities. There’s a palpable romance in the air during the monsoon season. Everything turns emerald green—the rain adds to the magic. But I won’t recommend it unless it’s your second or third visit to the district. There’s probably no better time to visit than November to January. The coffee picking season is underway, the weather is perfect to explore the myriad sights that make this one of Karnataka’s most compelling destinations.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Coorg-landscape_1637063868842.jpg"></figure><p>Spread over 4000 sq. kms, Kodagu or Coorg is India’s unofficial coffee capital. Once a landlocked region, safely cut off from outside influences, Coorg has a unique identity that is reflected in its language, cuisine, and lifestyle.</p><p><strong>Here are seven quintessential experiences for your next holiday in Coorg:</strong></p><h2>1. Most resorts can organise immersive coffee experiences for you that usually involve a drive through a coffee plantation, and a quick show and tell on the bean to cup process. Both the Arabica and the Robusta varietals thrive in Coorg’s hilly terrain and the silver oak trees provide the perfect canopy and protect the coffee trees from the harsh rays of the sun. First bloom the flowers (that look and almost smell like jasmine flowers), followed by coffee berries. These berries take about eight to 10 months to mature, after which they are ready to be manually harvested. Tee off</h2><p>Coorg has a wide array of golf courses—and the balmy weather allows you to tee off anytime during the day. The first time I wore my golf shoes in Coorg was at the compact Tata Coffee Course near Polibetta. The greens on this nine-hole course are verdant even in the summer. Golfing addicts swear by the Mercara Downs Club, an 18-hole course built with strong undulations along the fairway and greens as the layout uses the natural contours of the land. I’d also recommend the Coorg Golf Links in Ambatty for both beginners and pros.</p><h2>3. Ornithologist’s delight</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Coorg-drongo_1637139435579.jpg"></figure><p>Coorg is a bird lover’s paradise and is home to a staggering 300 types of birds. Many resorts organise bird watching trails just after sunrise. I spotted over 20 exotic birds in just an hour including the spunky ‘racket-tailed Drongo' that can imitate other birds. It's one of those times when it is tough to choose between your binoculars and your favourite camera lens.</p><h2>4. Bathe the elephants</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Coorg-Bathing-Elephant_1637139413634.jpg"></figure><p>The Dubare Elephant Camp on the banks of the River Cauvery is co-managed by Karnataka's Jungle Lodges and is the perfect setting to interact with these majestic creatures. Whether you want to admire them from afar, feed them, or take a swaying ride on one of the elephants—it’s a fun experience through and through. Nothing beats standing in knee-deep water from where you can actually bathe the elephants.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>5. Coorg’s Tibetan connection</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Golden-temple_1637063806591.jpg"></figure><p>Just outside the town of Kushalnagara is one of India's largest Tibetan settlements. The NamdrolingMonastery is located there and so is the stunning Golden temple where a 60-feet tall, gold-plated Buddha takes centre stage. The imposing statue is one of three large statues and is located in a gigantic yet serene hall. The outer fringes of the temple have small gift shops with Tibetan and Feng Shui souvenirs.</p><h2>6. Culinary adventures</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Coorg-Pandi-Curry_1637139493980.jpg"></figure><p>Farm-to-fork and low carbon footprint might be buzz words in the 2020s—but local produce has always been the mainstay and a way of life in Coorg. The <i>pandi </i>(pork) curry is arguably the most popular dish from the region and many home-stays serve an authentic version. A lot of the vegetarian specialities are also put together with locally-grown tender bamboo, wild mushrooms and raw jackfruit— all forest produce. The Kodavas are big rice eaters and their Puttus (steam-cooked dishes) are legendary. </p><h2>7. The great outdoors</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_AbbeyFalls_1637213504730.jpg"></figure><p>One of my favourite outdoor spots is the imposing Malahalli falls which are in full flow towards the end of the year after the monsoon season. Most roads in Coorg lead to its largest town Madikeri (formerly Mercara) which is also the halfway point to Talacauvery where the river Cauvery originates and is close to Abbey Falls another scenic spot. Coorg offers a plethora of trekking options. There’s Tadiandmol, the highest peak in the region with stunning vistas and the Galibeedu-Subramanya trek, that begins in the Galibeedu village.</p>

It is the most important festival of the Jain community as it marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, the 24th and last Tirthankara. Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra house some of the most ancient Jain temples that are worth the visit. Idols of Lord Krishna and his siblings, Balabhadra and Subhadra, placed inside the famous Jagannath temple, are adorned with gold. Every year, chariots are newly built for the deities. Participants enact Lord Jagannath's arrival to Puri, and the Maharisdance at the gate of the Jagannath temple. The temple is famous for its <i>mahaprasad</i>, locally known as <i>abhada</i>. You can also try the local <i>chhena-poda pitha</i>, <i>nolen-gud kheer</i>.  </p><h2>6. August 13-16, 2022 | Independence Day and Parsi New Year</h2><p>You can witness major Navroz celebrations in Maharashtra and Gujarat. Monday being a national holiday, on account of Independence Day, is followed by the <a href="https://zeezest.com/food/what-do-indian-parsis-eat-on-navroze-or-parsi-new-year-zee-zest-307">Parsi New Year</a>—and so this four-day long weekend is a good opportunity to travel to these states and participate in the Parsi community's celebration of the new year. Make sure to visit the Agiarys which are the fire temples thronged by the Parsis on the occasion. Seth Banaji Limji Agiary built in 1709 is the oldest surviving Agiary in Mumbai. Another one is the Manekji Sett Agiary built in 1733. Udvada Parsi Temple in Gujarat's Valsad district is considered the most sacred by the community. <i>Sali boti</i>, <i>jardaloo chicken</i>, and <i>patrani machi</i> are some of the dishes that you must try from the Navroz feast.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>7. For the Janmashtami long weekend, plan a trip to the city of Dwarka in Gujarat and be a part of the celebrations at the famous Dwarkadhish temple. The streets are decorated with lights and flowers, and the markets remain open till midnight. While young boys play Dahi Handi in the morning, at night the priest performs aarti at the temple.  </p><h2>8. October 1-5, 2022 | Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, and Dussehra</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Long-weekend-inside-image-5_1636974045657.jpg"></figure><p>Ashtami and Navami are two of the most important days of <a href="https://zeezest.com/culture/curious-case-of-durga-puja-rituals-that-make-this-festival-special-963">Durga Puja</a>, and Kolkata is the best city to witness the celebrations. A trip to the City of Joy means you get a chance to see some of the most beautifully decorated Goddess Durga pandals. Streets are filled with people all decked up, greeting each other, going pandal hopping and enjoying the delicious street food of Kolkata. <i>Kosha mangsho</i>, <i>illish shorshe</i>, and <i>chingri poshto</i> are some of the must-have dishes during the festival.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Long-weekend-inside-image-1_1636974396378.jpg"></figure><p>The last day of Navratri i.e. Dussehra or Vijaya Dashami is celebrated all over the country with utmost fervour; but festivities in other parts of the country come nowhere close to Kullu Dussehra and Mysore Dasara. In Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, the week-long festivities take place at Dhalpur grounds. Lord Raghunath Rath Yatra, cultural activities, song and dance performances, bonfires and a huge feast are some of the many activities that take place here. <i>Madra</i>, <i>boti</i>, and <i>patrodu</i> are some of the local dishes to try here.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Long-weekend-inside-image-8_1636974406250.jpg"></figure><p>Mysore Dasara goes on for 10 days where devotees take out elephant processions also called Jambu Savari—carrying Goddess Chamundeshwari's idol from Mysore palace to Bannimantap. Fireworks, cultural programmes, laser shows, thousands of lights adorning the Mysore palace, Doddakere Maidana exhibition, and the Nishad Baghflower show are some of the attractions that drag tourists here. The famous <a href="https://zeezest.com/food/history-of-mysore-pak-where-do-you-get-the-best-mysore-pak-52">Mysore Pak</a> is a must-have in the city.  </p><p>AlsoRead2</p><h2>9. And one of the many Indian cities where the celebrations are a must-see is Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The Dev Deepawali here is celebrated by devotees taking a dip in the holy Ganges, and offering prayers, flowers, and <i>diyas</i> to the river. The famous <i>ghats </i>and temples of Varanasi are lit up with <i>diyas </i>all around, and the courtyards are decorated with <i>rangoli</i>. Devotees perform Ganga <i>snan</i> and the priests hold the Ganga <i>aarti</i> on the banks of the river.</p>
