With all the ingredients and seasonal produce for the kitchens sourced from local organic farms and vendors, the property houses not one but four dining spaces where guests get to sample delicious local cuisines - The Market, The Drift (the pool bar), Anjuna Coffee and Co (patisserie and coffee shop) and Thyme and Ash (multi-cuisine).</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_103140_1658749479117.JPEG"><figcaption>Goan thali</figcaption></figure><p>After a delayed flight, a glass of Bird in Heaven - a lovely concoction of lavender syrup, vodka and soda wore off all the tiredness. Next on the table was an authentic Goan thali especially curated by Executive Sous Chef Rajeev Kumar that included some delicious recheado prawns, cafreal chonak, rawa fried king fish, prawn balchao, goan fish curry, khatti dal, goan rice, phulka, cabbage foogath, and halwa. The centrepiece of the meal was the rawa fried king fish and the prawns cooked in spicy, hot and tangy goan masala recheado.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_103214_1658751132681.JPEG"><figcaption>Tomato pesto parfait</figcaption></figure><p>The dinner choice comes from their French and Italian menu that was an utter joy. It kicked off with a delightful bite of ‘Walk in the Forest’ amuse bouche - a complimentary small bite that was served before the meal. To nibble on, I started with the Tomato pesto parfait made with grape seed oil, trebbiano fumee and aerated bocconcini that tastes as divine as it looks. Full marks to their art of plating! What came as a surprise, and a pleasant one, was their take on the ravioli made with wood sorrel and feta curry leaf noisette. The taste was spot on. However, the highlight of the night was the magical hand-selected mushroom soup with truffle alba - hands down one of the most intensely flavoured mushroom soups I have savoured. I must say that they really know the art of making the perfect soups; our second most favourite from the menu was the Spinach cream soup that was simply terrific. They have a delicious avocado toast made with gluten free bread, feta and tomatoes that definitely gets a nod from us. Next up on the menu is Spinach and egg white roll made with egg white, broccoli, onion, and tomatoes which tastes decent. They also have a special silken tofu with multigrain toast topped with sprouts, Indian spices. <p>The anticipation in the lobby of Hotel Dolphin was palpable, despite the muggy heat of Vizag’s summer. Families of two, three, four, and even five were gathered around, minding their bags and children, and organising the necessary documents multiple times to ensure nothing was forgotten. A large queue formed outside the banquet hall behind the reception area, as people waited patiently to check in to The Cordelia. Everyone was going on a cruise. And the fact that for most it was probably the first time was evident in the general atmosphere. The excited chatter was not easy to tune out. And as and when people cleared check-in, they were transported to the ship, waiting patiently at the dock, where after another round of security clearance, they were in, finding their rooms and “waiting to set sail”. </p><p>Cordelia Cruises was setting sail from the port of Vizag aka Vishakhapatnam. It was not its inaugural trip but the first from this port, packing in at least 1,300 travellers onto Cordelia – The Empress, a ship that originally belonged to the Royal Caribbean. It has been around since the 90s and has seen enough water; look closely and you might find touches of age in different parts of the ship, but it’s not something you’d care much about.      The ship is in good condition and with a capacity to accommodate at least 1,800 guests, this 692-feet long ship is a sight to behold. The ship would sail from Vizag, cross Chennai, touch Pondicherry where people could deboard and explore the little town (this did not happen due to various political complications) and sail back to Chennai for the passengers to end their trip. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Image%201%20-%20Aerial%20view%20of%20the%20ship_1656658108489.jpg"></figure><p>As Jurgen Bailom, CEO and President of Waterways Leisure Tourism Pvt Ltd, puts it, “Across the world, cruises are ideally meant for the rich. It is not cheap. What we had done is brought cruises to Indians so that Indians don’t have to spend a lot of money to go to another country for a cruise.” He’s not too wrong, even though it’s not really the same thing, but the fact that one can get on a flight and climb aboard a ship without having to even consider a visa is a blessing indeed. And best of all, it’s affordable, enabling plenty of Indians to tick off “cruise” from their holiday lists. </p><p>And the CEO was right, pretty much everything about this ship is focused on Indian families – the larger the better. But for those who have never even stepped inside a yacht, leave alone a cruise ship, everything is like discovering Alice’s Wonderland. Spread across 10 decks, the ship is rather grand on many levels and has tons of “selfie spots”. Lifts ferry you up and down, and you can go to each floor and explore. From a massive food court on the top deck to the medical bay at level 2, a theatre for shows (some of these are an absolute delight, if I might add), four bars, nearly as many places to grab a meal — there is enough and more to indulge in here. There’s a shop or two selling things you may have forgotten and need and even gifts you want to buy for yourself. It’s not a lot, but it’s something. And let’s not forget the DJs who keep everyone’s happy hormones activated. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Image%202%20-%20The%20view%20from%20Deck%2010_1656658281359.jpg"></figure><p><br>Bang in the middle of Deck 10 is a swimming pool. It’s not the kind of pool you’d want to take your morning laps in, there’s a gym for that— but more like dip your toes and splash around. If you’ve brought kids, you might want to let them loose there and go to the spa and zone out as experts fix your hair or your shoulder ache. </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>Where you sleep</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Image%204%20-%20One%20of%20the%20rooms_1656658175212.jpg"></figure><p>The accommodation is impressive. There are five categories of rooms, suited for different budgets. From the interior stateroom, mostly for the solo traveller, to the chairman’s suite for the affluent — you can take your pick. The chairman’s suite has its own bar as well. If you’re travelling as a couple, the mini suite is nice. It comes with its own balcony where you can sit and watch the vast expanse of the sea at night and think about life. The rooms have televisions, but at the time of this cruise, none of them were working. Don’t expect to have any connectivity on the ship either. They do have Wi-Fi, but it’s expensive and choppy. Bring movies on a pen drive if you’re carrying a laptop or just download from one of your favourite OTT channels. Or even better, bring a book. </p><h2>The distractions</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Image%205%20-%20The%20band%20plays__1656658200606.jpg"></figure><p>It’s incredible how there’s always something to do on this ship. For kids, there are games and gaming spots, shows and workshops. For adults, too, there are stage shows that will take you through a couple of hours of perfectly choreographed Bollywood dances to one that’s Burlesque-ish (not all shows are included in your ticket) or even karaoke evenings. A vibrant entertainment manager will keep announcing the shows through the day. There’s also a newsletter that you can pick up during breakfast to find your ‘thing to do for the day’. Know this, you’re on the water for at least two days, and in our case, we could not even dock at Pondicherry as originally scheduled, so it can get boring if you don’t find something to do. Unless you’re craving boring. </p><p>Yes, the ship does have a casino, which is active on international waters. A good place to win some or lose some. </p><h2>All the merriment</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Image%203%20-%20Breakfast%20at%20Chopstix_1656658236013.jpg"></figure><p>A cruise is never fun without its food. In the case of Cordelia, the food court is pretty much always open. During mealtimes, it’s also packed. But they’ve got everyone covered. There are separate sections for vegetarians and even those who follow a Jain diet. There are separate food counters for those who want grills, street food, tandoori, stir-fries, and so on. The Starlight, a two-level restaurant, is not as big as the food court but it’s big enough. Food is served as a buffet and is segregated carefully as well. If you don’t want the chaos of the food court, you can get a table here. </p><p>If you want a real quiet dinner, we’d recommend Chopstix. The menu here focuses mostly on Indo-Asian food and you’d need to reserve a table ahead. The service here is exemplary. Notwithstanding the fact that the bar at The Chairman’s Club does not serve snacks, it’s still nice to just sit here and grab a drink. You could sit by the window and wind down or by the bar and chat with the bartenders, who are always friendly. </p><p>It is also here you can enjoy some live music in the evening. The band is quite decent and will make you smile and forget about any truant kids running around and bumping into things and people. </p><p>The Connexions Bar is another watering hole on the ship. If you don’t want to go all the way up to Deck 10 and meander through the crowd, try the one behind Connexions Bar. Or just walk along the deck at Level 5. It’s particularly lovely to be there at night when things are relatively quiet. </p><p>Cordelia covers the high seas too, which means it will sail into deep waters and come back after a night. If you don’t want to do a two or a three-night trip, you might actually enjoy this quick trip. They sail from Chennai and now Vizag on the east coast and cover Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Diu on the west. <p>It was a lazy Friday evening in July and the sun had set, when my mother prompted me to go on a trek. This really did come as a shock to me considering she had always been against me going on even the easiest treks (out of concern), spare the monsoon treks. Anyway, I saw a window of opportunity and grabbed it. I called a few of my friends and planned a relatively easy monsoon trek to Visapur fort the very next day. Little did we know, what the future held for us, was something completely different from what we had in mind.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_1_1657285226887.jpeg"></figure><p>Owing to the perfect weather conditions and mesmerising views, Lonavala is a hotspot for tourists and trekkers from both Mumbai, and Pune. Hence, it is a place that is always expected to be crowded. But this weekend was different. I wish (or not) we knew while leaving home that due to heavy rainstorms, a red alert would be declared in Mumbai, and the remnants, yet quite severe, would be seen on the Visapur fort that Saturday.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_2_1657285238389.jpg"></figure><p>We took a jeep from Lonavala station to the base village of Visapur fort, Lohagadwadi. There are two other routes to the top, one from Malavli village, and the other from the backside of Malavli village but because Lohagadwadi was easy and much more suited for beginners, we chose that one. </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_3_1657285674324.jpeg"></figure><p>The normal temperature around that place is somewhere around 25-degree Celsius. But that morning Lohagadwadi witnessed a weather of 15 degrees Celsius, and it was windy, windy beyond imagination. But then, we were all crazy enough to come this far, and now there was no way anyone was going back. Afterall, I was leaving overseas, and it was my last trek for a long time, so there was no way I would go back home without being drenched head to toe.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_4_1657285693591.jpg"></figure><p>Visapur sits a little higher than its twin fort, Lohagad, that stands just opposite it, and is an iconic fort that soars over the village underneath. There is a 30-minute’ walk to the start of the fort, and a further 60-90 minutes climb through the boulders to the top of the fort. Although I promise you that the beauty of this fort will make you stay longer and make you believe that the real fun is not to summit it, but to live the journey in every step. From cisterns and caverns to rock carved water flow systems causing natural mini waterfalls, this fort has it all. It has a staircase with water flowing down it from the top right down to Malavli village, a unique feature that not many forts in the Sahyadri mountain range offer. Throughout the staircase, one will find grooves in the rocks causing mini waterfalls, more like outdoor shower systems. At the start of the trek near Lohagadwadi, one has to climb up a waterfall (really not as difficult as it sounds) to get to the top. And if all this wasn’t enough, you will witness nature’s jaw dropping beauty at the top, nature’s very own infinity pool! There are also lakes unusually large to fit on a fort, and for the cherry on the cake, a small Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir for all those crazy people like us, who want to trek amidst a storm. </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_6_1657285710932.jpg"></figure><p>It is said that the mountains are a mysterious place, once you go there, you belong there, you become a part of it, and if you really love them, you keep a part of you with them. The foothills of the fort were flooded, and all shops around were closed. A short and sweet summary would go something like this; I broke, and later lost my specs, one friend dropped his phone in the water while clicking pictures and it never came back to life, the other damaged his new watch that was apparently waterproof, one friend nearly fell on a sharp rock, and best of all, our tour guide lost his wallet with all his id cards and a huge sum of money. But nevertheless, we all went back home with a smile thanks to the beauty we witnessed that Saturday. <p>A Google search on monsoon treks in Lonavala, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Maharashtra, will lead you to places such as Rajmachi fort, Lohagad fort, Tiger point and Bhimashankar, but not many people know about the majestic Kataldhar waterfall trek, an unexplored trail through the dense forest that makes it one of the most adventurous and scenic treks in the state. Read on to plan your next monsoon summit with expert tips from Jayesh, trek leader of Treks and Trails, co-founder Trekcommunity who recently took a group of trekkers to Kataldhar.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_1_1657638486477.jpg"></figure><p>During the monsoons, Lonavala becomes a hot destination for all the trekkers. Since Lonavala is between Mumbai and Pune, it witnesses a huge crowd from both the cities at all the hotspots. But one such place that remains secluded and away from the crowd is Kataldhar. Kataldhar is a hidden gem of Lonavala that is not much explored. ‘Katal’ means wall of rock and ‘Dhar’ translates to waterfall. In summers, the waterfall dries up but in monsoons the land turns into a lush green carpet, the flow of the fall crashes over the rocks beneath, offering you a gorgeous vista.</p><h2>How to reach</h2><p>To reach Kataldhar, one has to either walk till Fanasrai or can hire a jeep. There are two routes from Lonavala. One route is from Fanasrai via the Della resort. It is an 8-km off-road route and the other option is the Upper Deck resort route. After reaching Fanasrai you will find the two mango trees, that is exactly the start point of the trek. Look for Hotel Kataldhar which indicates the start point of the trek from Fanasrai, followed by a descent into the valley which covers few paddy fields, a series of streams, a dense jungle and slippery patches. It takes a minimum of two hours of hiking from Fanasrai and three to four hours from Lonavala.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_3_1657638501358.jpg"></figure><h2>The journey begins</h2><p>From here, taking the route on the right we entered deeper into the forest. Thereafter it only gets darker, and you'll spot many crabs, long earthworms, monkeys, a batch of birds and the loud gushing of myriad waterfalls. </p><p><strong>Pro tip: </strong>You should wear full-sleeved T-shirts or shirts and full track pants to avoid any injuries from sharp thorns, bushes and attacks from mosquitoes and leeches. </p><p>AlsoRead0</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_2_1657638520647.jpg"></figure><p>As this waterfall hike is an offbeat route, you won’t find a lot of trekkers on the way, so the chances of getting lost in the dense jungle are fairly high even though there are ribbon markings on the trees to guide you. Also watch out for the cairns (stones placed on top of another) to guide you through the route. It's however recommended to take this trek with expert guides, as it’s extremely easy to lose your way through these forests.</p><p>After hiking through the forest, a huge waterfall will appear in front of you through the small gaps of trees. My heart skipped a beat after seeing a monster of a gracious waterfall. And finally, after seeing the waterfall, all this tiring stretch of hike and slips and falls become worth it. Move further ahead reach the main waterfall and you’ll spot a cave enroute. You will get a panoramic view of the waterfall along the Shrivardhan fort of Rajmachi standing just opposite to the fall. My friends and I had our packed lunches (<i>theplas</i> and bread and jam) and then we turned our photography modes on and went on to click roughly about 100-200 pictures even in heavy rains. I mean who wouldn’t want to post pictures of one of the most Instagrammable locations around Mumbai and Pune?</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_5_1657638535411.jpg"></figure><p>From there we reached just below the Kataldhar waterfall, the air around the flow gave me a different kind of an adrenaline rush. I would compare this waterfall to the Bahubali waterfall, it was that surreal. We also took a dip in that ice cold spinechilling water. We came out shivering and headed straight back to the starting point where our jeep was waiting for us. <p>I had been trekking in the Sahyadri mountain ranges for around nine months now and was more than confident about the terrain and my skills to summit various forts. I had done over 12 forts in this time including the ones that were hyped on social media and in the trekking community. My first ever trek was Harihar Fort in Nashik in the beginning of November 2020. Later I went on to do many famous ones like Mt. Kalsubai, Kalavantin Durg, Sandhan Valley, and even the infamous Bhairavgad Fort. Nevertheless, never had I ever done a monsoon trek.</p><p>So, I contacted Jayesh Behera, one of the finest trekkers I’ve met, to take me on a monsoon trek, and he suggested me to go to Asherigad—as it was beautiful and yet a well-suited beginner level trek for all those who have never trekked in the monsoon before.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_2_1658501399300.jpg"></figure><h2>How to reach</h2><p>Asherigad fort is around 100km north of Mumbai, and it took us about two hours to reach there by road. One can see the Kaldurg base village on the way to the fort. The lush green landscapes of Khodkona will teleport you into a realm so peaceful that you would insist on staying there.</p><h2>History and significance</h2><p>Asherigad has quite a bit of history to it. As legend says, this fort was originally built by Bhojraj, a descendant of the Shilahara dynasty, around 800 years ago. Later the Portuguese captured it and rebuilt it. During the early 1700s, the Peshwa recaptured the fort. Ultimately, in 1818, the fort came under the British rule.</p><p>Standing tall amidst the plateau of Palghar district stretching to the distant horizons, except the few smaller forts around, stands the massive misty mountain, Asherigad. This impressively strong fort covers a huge area, and its magnitude is not even remotely matched by anything around it. Asherigad literally translates to ‘the elder mountain’ and the moment we looked at it, we knew from where it got its name.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_1_1658501389989.jpg"></figure><h2>Asherigad fort is a masterpiece</h2><p>Asherigad is, in reality, a medium-sized fort situated at an altitude of 2000 feet; but thanks to its surroundings, it looks bigger than it actually is. Asherigad is a classic example of a fort built in the times when the Marathas ruled over the Sahyadri mountain ranges. There are water tanks huge enough to harvest rainwater till the end of December. Something unusual that this fort offers is the display of half buried cannons in those water tanks. This might be used as a war strategy to hide and protect cannons from the enemy, and before war, they were made accessible by draining the water through the cisterns. The fort also has many holes in the walls hidden from plain sight and usually in or near caves. Moreover, there are caves with platforms that have large openings, but all of them are positioned in such ways that cold air does not enter the cave.</p><p>In spite of all of these magnificent features of strategy, one can only find this fort a true example of masterpiece when they connect the dots. The caves mentioned above, used to function as watchtowers, and that is why the cave openings were designed in such a way that if the cave provided shelter to the soldiers, it made sure that the soldiers stayed warm. Furthermore, the holes in the walls that were hidden from plain sight were used to secretly, and yet effectively, deliver emergency messages from one end of to the fort to other. Hence, all these holes were made near the caves.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_3_1658501377947.jpg"></figure><h2>Trekking route</h2><p>The route to the top is a two to three-hour hike for people who want to get the perfect social media pictures and breaks but way less, maybe even half, for those who want to rush to the top. Although, in my opinion, it is better to enjoy the journey and meet new people on the way than to sprint all the way up. For when you reach the pinnacle, you don’t really conquer the mountain, you conquer yourself—you conquer the pains, the aches, the fears, you conquer your mind, you go through the grind to reach destinations that virtual travellers only see on screens, and that’s what makes the difference.</p><p>The trail head starts near Khodkona village with a dense forest route providing shade to trekkers in the summer, and a natural canopy from rain in the monsoons. The route is clearly marked so there is no chance of anyone getting lost along the way. During or after heavy rains, trekkers usually see small river streams along the way, mostly near the base. Visitors need to be aware of the unusually large mosquitos, also known as “tiger mosquitos” found there. The route later widens, but at the same time, it gets steeper, and relatively tougher, although this path does not last long. The base of the entrance has a huge rock face in the route on which one can find a small sculpture of Ganesh. The final part of the climb has been made easier and therefore accessible to more people by adding a ladder till the top of the fort. From the ladder, it is a 10-minute road to the top. From the top plateau, if you look towards the Southwest, you will be able to see the Kohoj fort. The summit offers a clear view of the skyline, except in the monsoon when clouds seek their own freewill to play around and steal people’s attention. I was more than nervous to go on a monsoon trek even after knowing that I had trekked enough to be at par with people who were experienced. The nervousness was only because of the possibilities that my mind thought of—slipping, falling, getting mud all over you, embarrassing yourself in front of people, etc. But everyone around me in the trekking community encouraged me to not overthink and go for it. On 12th June 2021, when I went back home, I knew I was a true traveller, and not a temporary tourist. My footprints on Asherigad might have faded, but the memories never will. At least the lessons learnt there, never will: When it rains, look for the rainbows, and when it’s dark, search for the stars.</p>

<p>The results are out, and India has ranked 87th on the 2022 Henley Passport Index from Henley & Partners—an authoritative ranking of the world’s passports. They use exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) on how many destinations a particular passport can provide access to without a prior visa, which means visa-on-arrival. And then rank the ‘strongest’ and ‘weakest’ of the 199 passports from across the globe.  </p><h2>Henley Passport Index 2022 </h2><p>On this year’s Henley Passport Index, Japan has ranked number one on the list and bagged the title of the world’s most powerful passport. This provides the citizens of Japan hassle-free access to approximately 193 countries. Japan is followed by Singapore and South Korea, whose passport holders have access to 192 countries.  </p><p>Germany, Spain, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, Austria, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden, France, Ireland, Portugal, and United Kingdom are a few of the other countries in the top 10 of the 2022 Henley Passport Index. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s passport has been ranked as the least useful, offering visa-free access to only 27 countries. For the uninitiated, this passport index also defines the strength of a particular country’s diplomatic relations with other countries. <p>A question that kept popping up in my head all through my stay in Hampi is ‘how on earth are these boulders balancing themselves and not rolling down and squashing tourists on their way down’. Hampi looks like the magnum opus of an illusionist. How else can you explain the precariously perched boulders that are sprinkled all over Hampi? The lush green paddy fields, meandering Tungabhadra river and historical ruins add to the enchantment.    </p><p>This temple town beckoned me for the second time this year. And while my first visit was all about the monuments (there are over 500 of them and a staggering number still being excavated) I managed to dig deeper this time. Here’s my selection of the best things to do in Hampi that goes over and beyond the temples and palaces of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.</p><h2>Historical ruins </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Elephant%20table%20at%20Lotus%20Mahal_1657120559513.jpg"></figure><p>Hampi marks the flamboyant past of the Vijayanagara Empire of the 7th century. This extremely prosperous kingdom was plundered by Muslim invasion in the 1560s. What remains now are ruins that are reminiscent of exquisite craftsmanship, making Hampi the world's largest open-air museum. The humungous Vijaya Vittala temple is a great way to start the exploration. Reserve a few hours to admire the extraordinary stone chariot, the musical pillars in the temple halls and intricate sculptures. Further down is the Virupaksha temple with an exquisite gateway and stone carvings depicting scenes from the Mahabharat. In the same complex is the Hampi Bazaar a series of open arcades which used to be a booming market in the Vijayanagara rule. This was where merchants traded horses, precious stones, jewellery, silk clothes, etc. The Narasimha statue carved from one single stone and the Hanuman temple on top of a hill are the other attractions here. </p><p><strong>Note: </strong>Temple fatigue does hit after the first few. The best thing to do is limit the temple visits to 3-4 a day and mix it up with a few sunsets and river rides.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_The%20stone%20chariot%20at%20Vijaya%20Vithala%20temple_1657120619433.jpg"></figure><h2>Hike up The Matanga Hill</h2><p>This is something I missed on my first visit but managed to squeeze in my second. After a visit to the Hampi Bazaar my guide suggested I hike up the Matanga hill for a bird’s eye view of the historic town. The 30-minute trek up is moderately difficult (barring some tricky patches) and is littered with abandoned shrines that I checked out while pausing to catch my breath. The view from the top is spellbinding - at one corner is the Turthu canal winding its way through banana plantations, on the other end the Tungabhadra snaking through the town and in the distance stands the Virupaksha Temple. The abandoned bazaar and Hampi’s rock-studded landscape makes for a picturesque backdrop. Early morning is the best time to hike and catch the sunrise. I did it in the evening and was rewarded with an equally stunning sunset.   </p><p><strong>Note:</strong> Get dressed in your most comfortable pair of sneakers and carry a torch if you go in the morning. </p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>Spend time at the Lotus Mahal</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Lotus%20Mahal%20in%20Hampi%2C%20Pic%20by%20Nivedita%20Jayaram%20Pawar_1657120609712.jpg"></figure><p>This gorgeous palace is among the few structures in Hampi that has survived both Mughal assaults and the ravages of time. Shaped like lotus petals it was used by the royal women of Vijayanagara to simply chill. Something like a wellness spa! There is a huge elephant stable here and a beautiful tree to sit under with a freshly cut tender coconut.  </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Lotus%20Mahal%2C%20Hampi_1657120654969.jpg"></figure><h2>Relish a thali at Green Restaurant</h2><p>Nestled in a banana plantation the Green restaurant serves the freshest of meals. Choose the stone seating under the shade of trees or settle indoor under thatched roof. The food is cooked by villagers and served home style with roughly chopped salad and a banana from the field. The cashew and vegetable curry is the highlight as also the peppery rasam, jowar rotis and bhajias (fritters) that accompany every meal. The buttermilk helps to cool down the slightly fiery meal. They also do pizzas and pasta for their international guests. The coffee is good too.</p><h2>Glide in a coracle  </h2><p>The perfect way to wrap up a hectic day in Hampi is a lazy float across the Tungabhadra. While I have relished quite a few scenic boat rides in India, this one’s different. To begin with the vessel is a lightweight circular boat made of bamboo. Anxious at first I tiptoed into the boat and sat cross-legged on the floor. But my fears were laid to rest as soon as the boat took off. Drifting across the gently flowing river flanked by mammoth boulders on both sides puts you in a trance. The boat passes some temple and fort ruins. At one point I was asked to duck down to navigate a small gap between two boulders! The ride concluded with some crazy spinning which felt like being in one of those teacup rides at Imagica. Fun nonetheless! </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>Bouldering among the ruins</h2><p>For many many years Hampi was a closely guarded secret among boulderers. Not anymore, especially after the 2003 sensational climbing video of Chris Sharma. Bouldering is a lot like rock climbing, but is done without any ropes, harnesses or equipment. You don’t climb as high, but it can be just as challenging. Hanumanahalli near Laxmi Golden Beach Resort is where all the bouldering action is. The boulders here have has interesting names – Banana Baba, Egg Boulder, Hot Slapper and Sunset View. Shoes, crash mat and chalk are available for hire. <br>A word of caution: Bouldering is a risky sport. If you are a beginner try it only under proper guidance.</p><h2>Say hello to cute sloth bears</h2><p>This hidden gem in Hampi is worth a visit if you are looking to take a break from the maze of heritage buildings. Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary is Asia's first sloth bear sanctuary and also home to a blooming forest of wild fruit trees (to attract bears) and edible fruit orchards. The wild shrubs and gigantic rocks are a perfect haunt for these cute bears. The other guests include leopards, jackals, hyenas, foxes, pangolins and porcupines. There is a watchtower within the sanctuary that makes for a great vantage point to view the bears descending from the adjacent hill in the evening. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Virupaksha%20Temple%2C%20Hampi%20pic%20by_1657120729916.jpg"></figure><figure class="table"><table><tbody><tr><td><p>The nearest train station is at Hospet, which is 13km from the ruins of Hampi. There are overnight trains from Bangalore to Hospet. The nearest airport is Hubli Airport, which is about 166km away.</p><p>The best way to get around Hampi is to rent a scooter or bicycle. There are rickshaws too.</p><p>Beer is banned in Hampi but available across the river which is called the hippie side of Hampi. Be prepared to shell out double the MRP.</p><p>Best time to visit Hampi is from October to February. Make a note of the Hampi festival in January.</p></td></tr></tbody></table></figure>
