Starting from the basics, the 12 jyotirlinga are collectively known as <i>Dwadash jyotirlinga</i>.</p><p>According to Śiva Mahāpurāṇa, the jyotirlinga story began when Brahma (the creator) and Vishnu (the pervader) picked up a quarrel in a bid to establish supremacy over the other. As their quarrel turned into a war, Mahadev interfered to settle the debate. He pierced the three worlds appearing as a huge infinite pillar of light. To win the battle, Brahma and Vishnu were asked to find the end of the light in either direction. While Brahma moved to find the light upwards, Vishnu went downwards.</p><p>In the end, Vishnu accepted his defeat, however, Brahma lied to win the war. Hearing upon Brahma's lie, a furious Shiva emerged from the pillar and cursed Brahma that though the latter had created the world, no one will worship him till the end of eternity—and he blessed Vishnu instead.</p><p>It is believed that during the confrontation, Lord Shiva appeared on the earth in 64 places in the form of Lingodbhava. Of those 64 places, only 12 are considered to be the major ones. It is believed, in each Jyotirlinga, Lord Shiva resides in the form of a deity. They say that one of the country's largest and oldest Banyan trees is growing somewhere in this park. This park gets its name from the Hemis Gompa monastery located within its confines. After November there can be significant snowfall, and all jeep travel is prohibited.</p><h2>12. The beautiful sandalwood forest nearby is highly recommended for a visit. One can view herds of gaurs and elephants, strolling around casually in this area. And then there are the playful dolphins. The pear-shaped lake is dotted with a few small islands, and has fisheries and salt pans around its shore. Private ferry operators give guided tours of the park. It is advisable to take a packed lunch (along with water) before heading to the park. <p>My all-time favourite travel journey was a visit to our family home in Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh, years ago. Days were spent soaking in the sun and stomping around Bakrota Round, a circuitous pathway hemmed in by towering deodar trees and whispery hills, miles away from my hectic travel schedule.</p><p>The pandemic has recalibrated travel as we know it. A far cry away from a huge airline-fueled carbon footprint, jostling tourists and ticking off must-see touristy spots, wandering now is much more intentional, soulful and immersive. Travel is a journey of discovery, not only of our own backyard but an inner exploration of ourselves. </p><p>Sangjay Choegyal, general manager of the luxe retreat, Six Senses Fort Barwara, which launched during the pandemic and played host to the biggest Bollywood wedding of actors Vicky Kaushal-Katrina Kaif says, it has been a huge learning curve for everyone. “It has taught us to appreciate the slow pace of life. Slow, immersive travel will continue to be relevant in the coming years because it allows people to dive into enriching experiences that educate, inspire and alter them.” Whether a traveller is jetting off for work or a family holiday, he wants to unwind, reconnect and restore. “Travelling slowly gives them the opportunity to form profound, deep connections-with the place, its people, culinary heritage and culture.”</p><h2>Domestic Travel </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Mary-Budden-Estate%2C-Binsar_1642658669900.jpg"></figure><p>Ongoing lockdowns, cancelled flights, onerous visa waits, multiple health checks and more have led to a fizzling down of the great trip abroad. Instead, many have chosen to discover their own backyard. Drive down micro-vacations and hyper-local travel have become popular, especially exploring little known, secluded locales. Explains Shobha Mohan, Founder Partner, RARE India, “The pandemic has connected people with their own countries. It has highlighted micro destinations, the importance of unhurried travel, and being amidst nature. There is a greater awareness for mindful and responsible travel.”</p><p>One of the biggest revelations has been the great Indian road trip, with the wide-open road emerging as the winner in the pandemic travel sweepstakes, with the car emerging as a safer, self-paced mode of travel. Agrees Akshita Bhanj Deo, marketing and communication head of the Belgadia Palace, an 18th-century Victorian palace in Odisha and now a heritage hotel. She says, “Domestic travel will be the future of the hospitality industry. There will be a focus on road trips taken to offbeat locations closer to home, with a preference for boutique homestays that offer experiences that are authentic and unique. The classic Indian road trip with simple pleasures such as picnics in nature, scenic natural monuments and homemade meals is back in fashion.” Proximity to home good medical facilities and low-cost safe travel will be at the top of the traveller’s mind, who is browsing the internet to get great deals for a quick getaway at places where safety protocols are in place. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_SaffronStays-Parsi-Manor%2C-Matheran_1642658702505.jpg"></figure><p>Tejas Parulekar, founder of private full-service villa and estate company SaffronStays details how road travel has changed over the years, “If one wanted to visit Panchgani, they had to book a bus. Siddharth Yadav, Vice President, MRS Group of Hotels, behind properties such as Suryagarh, Narendra Bhawan and Mary Budden Estate, believes that people are seeking a unique travel experience. “People are willing to take on immersive journeys and connect to local culture. They are on a quest to undertake activities that provide them with serenity and seek more inclusions in terms of wellness experiences to unwind and relax as they break free from their mundane daily routine.” By weaving in cultural experiences of the regions as well as creating signature culinary experiences, MRS Group of Hotels offer a slice of local life to guests.   </p><p>At The Belgadia Palace, Bhanj Deo has woven together a medley of rural experiences, such as watching a local Chhau performance, a mix of martial arts and folk dance from the region and a visit to a heritage village. But there is a breed of travellers who just want to hunker down. “The within-home experiences are also a big attraction. Each specially curated experience showcases communities, cultures and customs that were glossed over previously, now are etched deep in the annals of the mind.</p><p>People missed travelling, Parulekar says. The pandemic shifted their thinking too. She concludes, “There’s a lot of gratitude and appreciation among people for the smaller things in life that we often take for granted, the company of those we love, their safety and well-being, and intimate travel experiences.” </p>

The air reverberates with the sounds of the <i>dhol</i>, as people—particularly across northern India—celebrate the culmination of the winter season and welcome spring with open arms. The festival also serves as a symbol of gratitude to the Sun god for the harvests of the year.</p><p>Legend goes that Lohri derives its name from the word ‘loh’, which signifies the warmth and light provided by the fire. A Walk On The Wild Side Of Maharashtra 

<p>Anyone who’s been on a safari before knows that words just aren’t enough to recount the experience. In the past month, I went on not one but eight safaris across the length and breadth of India for <a href="https://zeezest.com/shows/safari-india-with-rannvijay-singha-all-episodes-full-episodes-24">Safari India</a>, Zee Zest’s latest show. It’s been days since I returned home; the dust and dirt have been washed off but the unforgettable memories of encounters of the wild kind will remain.</p><p>The entire Safari India expedition was hectic, and it forced me to step out of my comfort zone and plunge myself into the unknown to discover and explore newer terrains, cultures; meet inspiring people, learn about, and admire nature and its beautiful creations on land as well as the sea. And all this resulted in me learning some of the best life lessons, which I wish to impart to my kids, Kainaat and Jahaan, someday.</p><h2>1. Patience is key</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_1_1642769022138.jpg"></figure><p>American philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, once said, “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience”. That’s the first and foremost lesson I learnt– and this is also coming from my short stint as a wildlife photographer on Safari India. Living a fast-paced city life forces you to continue in the same momentum. But the wild has a clock of its own and that teaches you to slow down, be patient, live in the present and appreciate what’s in front of you. A tiger, a leopard, or any animal for that matter, isn’t waiting to cross paths with you. </p><p>Did you know wildlife photographers spends days and months getting that one perfect shot? Documentary filmmakers spend four-five years or even more to create that one film that we finish watching within minutes.</p><h2>2. Survival of the fittest is real</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Safari_India_elephant_1642619715550.jpg"><figcaption>A bull elephant walking in a forest | Representational image</figcaption></figure><p>The Darwinian theory of ‘survival of the fittest’ is true in the jungle. Even the king of the jungle must hunt for his food, if not, he will die of starvation. Elephants always stick to their herd but when a bull (male) elephant is in heat (musth - a state of frenzied sexual excitement in the males of certain large mammals, as per Collins' Dictionary), the females drive him away. He is left all alone and, at this point, he is not only making sense of his sexual urges but also dealing with the pain of separation from his family. During this period, elephants turn aggressive, and it is considered dangerous to be around them. This period lasts for approx. two to three months and it is a testing time for the bull elephant. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_safari_india_rannvijay_singha_zee_Zest_1642623021085.jpg"><figcaption>A bear cub hugs Rannvijay's leg at Pakke Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh</figcaption></figure><p>We came across bear cubs abandoned by their mother; my heart immediately went to them. For us humans, if parents aren’t around, there is always an aunt or uncle, if not, even orphanages to take care of young ones. But for these cubs, it’s either learn to hunt for food or die of starvation or be eaten by an animal. That’s the harsh reality of their life. </p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>3. Co-dependency</h2><p>The forest is thoroughly connected, communicative and co-dependent. Animals have calls for each other, so when a tiger is on the prowl that call will allow other animals to save themselves. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Safari%20Inside%20Images_shutterstock_1642622693195.jpg"><figcaption>Representational image | Shutterstock</figcaption></figure><p>One of the forest officers told me that a tiger is the indicator of a healthy jungle. How? Tigers eat herbivores like deer who eat trees and plants, and the vultures finish the tigers’ leftovers, which ensures no spread of harmful pathogens that may develop on dead animals. Take the river as another example. It provides drinking water to the animals, helps plants and trees thrive, and is home to diverse wildlife. The maintenance of this food chain is crucial to the ecological balance of the forest.</p><h2>4. Listening is better than talking</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_safari_india_rannvijay_singha_inside_zeezest_1642622944237.jpg"></figure><p>Another phrase that proves true in the case of a wildlife territory is ‘<i>nazarhati, durghatnaghati</i>’ (which loosely translates to accidents that happen when you’re not alert). There is a reason why tourist guides and forest officers ask you to stay quiet and observe. The howls, hoots and caws are indicative of movement and development within the jungle. Understanding these sounds or their absence is an effective way of discovering and monitoring animal behaviour. Being in tune with the jungle is the only way to discover the beauty of the local residents whether they are avian, insects or mammals. </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>5. But, over the past 10-15 years, with the efforts of the government and the tribes folk, they have transitioned into a more sustainable life. Today, tourists visit their village to experience and document Karbi’s unique culture, traditions, and food. Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, Maharashtra </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_common_langur_nagzira_1643366101194.jpg"></figure><p>This preserved green oasis in Maharashtra lies between the state's Bhandara and Gondia districts. The place is considered to be an important conservation unit of Central India, particularly Vidarbha, and helps maintain an ecological balance among the people settled in the area. As many as 34 species of mammals,166 species of birds, 36 species of reptiles, and four species of amphibia can be found here. Lime butterfly, palm civet, bar-headed goose (a winter migrant from Tibet and Ladakh), Indian rock python, and six-toed frog are some of the many species that can be spotted here. The Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to lakes such as Nagzira, Murapur, Chorkhamara, and more. It also neighbours places such as Navegaon National Park, Tibetan camp at Gothangaon, and Itiadoh Dam.</p><p><strong>Getting there</strong>: Nagpur airport is the closest to this wildlife sanctuary. You can also take a train to either Nagpur, Gondia, or Bhandara. If you are travelling by road, then Sakoli bus stand (en-route Mumbai-Kolkata NH6) is where you must deboard.</p><h2>2. The Dagwan River runs through the park and the neighbouring Sangargulu Valley, where you can also trek to spot leopards and other wildlife.</p><p><strong>Getting there</strong>: Srinagar airport, as well as the railway station, are both well connected. For those travelling by road, Lal Chowk bus stand is the nearest.</p><h2>3. Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Wildlife%20reserve_Insides_3_1643361243396.jpg"></figure><p>Often dubbed as the Amazon of the East, the Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary spreads across Tinsukia, Charaideo, and Dibrugarh districts of Assam, and Changlang and Tirap districts of Arunachal Pradesh. Royal Bengal tiger, hoolock gibbons, capped langurs, and slow loris are some of the wildlife species that can be spotted here. Birdwatchers can look out for khalij pheasant, ospreys, Great Himalayan hornbill, white-winged wood duck, and more. The area also houses many ethnic communities of Assam such as Tai Khamyangs, Khamtis, and Morans amongst others. Not to mention those from the tea garden tribe and Nepal.</p><p><strong>Getting there</strong>: You can take a flight to Dibrugarh and then rent a taxi from there in order to reach the sanctuary. You can also take a train to Naharkatiya, and then drive to the sanctuary.</p><h2>6. The park is also home to a large number of eucalyptus plants and its soil is rich in humus. Speaking of vegetation, the place is dotted with trees including Aesculus indica and Pinus griffithii; shrubs such as hetarantha, Sorbaria tomentosa, and Dicotyledonous; and herbs like Rumex patientia.  </p><p><strong>Getting there</strong>: While Srinagar airport is the closest, for train travellers, Jammu is the perfect option. Moreover, Pahalgam has smooth bus services as well.</p><h2>9. <p>As a new year dawns, the hospitality industry cautiously looks at a return to ‘normal’. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we live and, of course, travel. Demand for sustainable travel was steadily rising over the past few years, but the pandemic has proven to be a tipping point for travellers to switch from intent to action. In June 2021, leading hotels’ aggregator Booking.com released their <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://globalnews.booking.com/bookingcoms-2021-sustainable-travel-report-affirms-potential-watershed-moment-for-industry-and-consumers/">2021 Sustainable Travel Report</a>, which revealed that 83% of global travellers think sustainable travel is vital—with 61% saying the pandemic has made them want to travel more sustainably in the future. While 81%of travellers said they want to stay in a sustainable accommodation in the upcoming year, almost half (49%) believe there simply aren’t enough sustainable travel options available. From the hotels’ perspective, the survey found that while three out of four accommodation providers said they have implemented at least some kind of sustainability practices at their property, only one-third actively communicate about their efforts proactively to potential guests.</p><p>Good intentions are present on both sides, but there is still a lot of work to be done to make sustainable travel an easy choice for travellers. An important step in closing this gap is providing more sustainability information in a transparent way. This is where credible, third-party accreditation can be helpful.</p><h2>Search smart</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Villa-Courtyard_1641389765757.jpg"><figcaption>© Evolve Back Coorg</figcaption></figure><p>In September 2021, Google unveiled a new feature to find sustainable hotels—an eco-certified badge with a green leaf-shaped icon next to the hotel name. This indicates the hotel has met high standards of sustainability as certified by independent organisations like Green Key or EarthCheck. Eco-certification is self-reported by hotels but must be backed up by third-party audits. Green Key is a voluntary eco-label awarded to more than 3,200 hotels in 65 countries, while EarthCheck is a scientific benchmarking certification for travel and tourism, which has certified hotels in more than 70 countries. Other notable certifications Google will recognise include LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a globally recognised green building rating system), Green Seal, Green Globe, and Green Growth 2050 Standard. The last is a seal of approval from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) that has been measuring hotels and resorts according to 200 sustainability-related metrics since 2015. Certification by these organisations includes an assessment of environmental impact from at least four categories: energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable sourcing.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><p>If you want to dive into a hotel’s specific sustainability practices, simply click the ‘About’ tab to see a list of what they’re doing. For example, the listing for ITC Maratha, Mumbai shows that it has a green building design, a recycling and food waste reduction programme, and water-efficient showers. It is also LEED and ISO certified. The listing for DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Bengaluru shows that it has a responsible purchasing policy and an energy conservation programme; the hotel also donates and composts excess food.</p><p>Similarly, Booking.com is currently displaying over 30 certifications officially approved by the GSTC, Green Tourism, and the EU Ecolabel, as well as multiple hotel chain sustainability programs. This information is sourced directly from the certification bodies and displayed on the property pages. These measures by Google and Booking.com offer more transparency particularly against greenwashing, which runs rampant in the hospitality industry.</p><h2>Sustainability in practice</h2><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CNH5bbFB48n/"></oembed></figure><p>The term greenwashing was coined by environmentalist Jay Westerveld in 1986 to call out hotels that ask guests to use fewer towels while making no significant efforts to become more sustainable overall. Hotels often spend more time and money on marketing themselves as being sustainable rather than on actually minimising their environmental impact. The easiest way to spot greenwashing is to watch out for buzzwords and feel-good fuzzy language, especially when claims are not backed up by any data or proof.</p><p>Want to travel more sustainably? Here are some things to look out for when you book your next hotel:</p><ul><li><span style="color:hsl(0,0%,0%);"><strong>Energy and water efficiency:</strong> Does the hotel give clear information on how much electricity, lighting, or air-conditioning is powered by renewables? Does it use water-efficient taps, toilets, and showers?</span></li><li><span style="color:hsl(0,0%,0%);"><strong>Waste reduction:</strong> What do they do with their glass, paper, card, plastic, metal, or food leftovers? Do they have a recycling programme?</span></li><li><span style="color:hsl(0,0%,0%);"><strong>Food and drink:</strong> Is produce sourced locally, or even better, grown on site? Is the seafood responsibly sourced? Do they offer vegetarian and vegan options?</span></li><li><span style="color:hsl(0,0%,0%);"><strong>Employment policies:</strong> Do they hire from the local community? <p>The pick-up from our hotel was scheduled for 5.40 am on a December morning and the temperature in Jaipur was frigid at 16 degrees celsius. The winter sky donned a deep shade of blue bearing absolutely no hint of the soon to appear rays of light. It was our last day in Jaipur and the excitement of an opportunity to spend the morning in a forest located right in the middle of the city had helped us to wake up early. The bonus? A chance to spot the forest’s most popular inhabitants - the leopards.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_By-Kunal-Gangwal-%282%29_1642001493129.jpg"></figure><p>Our pick-up vehicle was an open, electric jeep. “These EVs by Mahindra are very silent and work best for the forest. If the tourists are quiet, this allows sightings without disturbing the animals too much,” our driver and guide Shobhit, said proudly. We were at the gate of the Jhalana Leopard Safari Park in about 20 minutes. Our enthusiasm had ensured that we arrived quite early so it gave us time to browse through a gallery that displayed stunning photographs of the leopards shot by talented wildlife photographers. The gallery also had framed headshots and details of some of the leopards who currently reside in the park.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><p>Situated right in the heart of Jaipur city, not too far from the Airport, Jhalana was a hunting ground for the royals and many years later,  the road was made accessible to private vehicles at a cost of Rs 300 per car. It was initially popular as a birding destination and was frequented by many celebrated photographers. Although the number of vehicles allowed on this road was restricted, it still caused a lot of disruption to the animals and so the government discontinued this facility.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_By-Kunal-Gangwal-%281%29_1642001505190.jpg"></figure><p>“The last tiger in Jhalana was shot in 1948,” says Rohit Gangwal, a wildlife conservationist who runs an eco-tourism venture in Rajasthan called World of Wilderz and conducts safaris in Jhalana. “Jhalana was opened for the first time for tourists in December 2016 and in 2017 it was formally identified as a Leopard Reserve by the Rajasthan Forest Department. There was an infestation of Prosopis Juliflora (Videshi Babool or Kikkar in Hindi), an invasive weed harmful to native biodiversity, which was cleared, and grasslands were developed. This is perfect for leopards and also provides fodder for other animals. Today, while the vehicles that go into the park are privately owned, they still run as per a government roster, just like in other forests like Ranthambore,” he elaborates.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_By-Kunal-Gangwal-%284%29_1642001535167.jpg"></figure><p>The park is spread in an area of 23 sq km, against the backdrop of the picturesque Aravalli hills, of which 40% area is currently open to visitors. There are two zones in this park, one is the base zone and the other is the ‘Shikar Audhi’ - a three-storeyed hunting lodge of the Royal families of Jaipur, and the safari permit allows you to visit both zones. Safaris are conducted in two batches - one in the morning and one in the evening – and only ten vehicles are allowed in the park at a time. The forest is home to 30-35 leopards, out of which 6-7 leopards have their territory in the area of the park that’s open for tourism.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_DSCN6109_1642001549171.jpg"></figure><p>We were sharing our vehicle with four others as per park rules which allows 6 people in each jeep. We drove into the park as the first rays of the sun fell on the curving branches of the trees. A lone Nilgai indulged in breakfast and barely looked up to check us out. Spotted deer, langurs, and wild boars seemed very much at ease, which made us doubt that a predator was around. “A few days ago, a male leopard had made a kill in this area. He had killed a large nilgai, so he must be around somewhere around. We’ll scan that area first, before there’s too much light, as that is the best time to spot a leopard,” Shobhit explained.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><p>After driving around slowly for about 20 minutes and soaking in the smell and sounds of the forest, we saw a jeep speed away. While passing us, he signalled for us to follow him. When we got to the place where the other jeeps were parked,  we were told that they had seen a leopard walk into the tall grass of the dry, deciduous forest. We had just missed him.</p><figure class="image image_resized image-style-align-left" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Jhalana-deer_1642001569273.jpg"></figure><p>Our driver made a quick calculation of where the road might lead to and where the leopard may be seen again and made his way there. We parked the jeep near where the kill lay and turned the engine off, and sure enough, in a few minutes, despite his perfect camouflage - we spotted him. “His name is Rana and he’s a sub-adult male,” Shobhit whispered. While being surrounded by telephoto lenses and shutterbugs Rana finished his meal. A complete photographer’s delight, he gave everyone ample opportunity to get their perfect shots. He walked to the nearest water body and then changed his mind, as the chattering in the gathered crowd got louder. He made his way uphill into the more dense part of the forest. “There is a Nala on the other side. The leopard feels safe because he knows that even when he’s walking on the road, he can always escape to that side where jeeps can’t go,” says Gangwal.</p><p>“There are multiple reasons why it is easier to spot leopards in Jhalana as opposed to other forests,” Gangwal tells us. “The otherwise shy cat is the apex predator here and does not have much competition for survival, which makes them confident. There is also no big prey here so even when the leopard makes a kill of a peacock or deer or a wild boar,  he needs to come out and hunt more often. You’ll notice across forests in India, that sub-adult male, female tigers, and cubs are the ones spotted more often. Adult male tigers become reclusive, The space in the park is less, hence male leopards need to repeatedly come out to mark their territory. Some of these leopards have seen humans since their birth and that makes them slightly bolder,” he adds.</p><figure class="image image_resized image-style-align-left" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Jhalana-forest-nilgai_1642001587341.jpg"></figure><p>The next time you are in Jaipur, make sure you keep some time aside for the forest!</p><h2>How to get there:</h2><p>The Jhalana Safari Park is situated in Malviya Nagar Industrial Area in Jaipur. </p><p><strong>Nearest Airport:</strong> Jaipur International Airport is 8.1 km from the Park.</p><p><strong>Nearest Railway Station:</strong> Jaipur Junction is the nearest railway station located at a distance of 13 km from the Park.</p><p><strong>Cost:</strong> The Safari costs Rs 1,100 per person on weekends and Rs 800 per person on weekdays. Pick-ups and drops from the airport or your hotel, come at an additional cost.</p><h2>When in Jaipur: </h2><p>If you’re in Jaipur for a day and have done the safari at Jhalana in the morning, there are a bunch of things you can do in the city. The Hawa Mahal and the City Palace are the most popular places visited. While the ticket that allows you access to the museums and the palace grounds at the City Palace is priced at Rs 200, the ticket to visit the interiors of the royal residence is Rs 2500 per head. Make sure you stop at the Amer Fort. Amer, which is one of the rare city monuments that are open until 8.30 pm. While the fort has its own charm in the day, it is beautifully lit in the evenings and offers a very different ambiance. We were sad to learn that the fort’s Son et Lumiere (the sound and light show) has been discontinued. Amitabh Bachchan’s telling of the fort’s history was something we looked forward to on our visits. On the road to Amer, you’ll spot the Jal Mahal - a palace in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake. The palace was originally constructed in 1699; the building and the lake around it were later renovated and enlarged in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II. It is not open to visitors.</p><h2>Meals: </h2><p>Don’t miss the Kheema Bati - an innovative version of the traditional Rajasthani  Dal Bati at Spice Court located at Civil Lines in the city. Right next to this restaurant, there’s a cute patisserie and cafe called Dzurt, run by Cordon Bleu-trained chef Tejasvi Chandela that serves delicious desserts and a variety of tea.</p><h2>Stay: </h2><p>Jaipur has a variety of accommodations available at different price points. Many of the city’s erstwhile havelis, palaces, and royal homes have been converted into heritage properties. These allow you to experience the State’s legendary hospitality at its best while offering you a glimpse into its glorious past. We recommend the Alsisar Haveli, the home of the Thakurs of Alsisar, that offers 45 tastefully crafted rooms and a regal ambiance. Located on Sansar Chandra Road, the hotel is close to most of the city’s primary attractions. Don’t miss the breakfast by the pool!</p>

However, sometimes, it shocks and thrills us to find out that we also play a part in the cohesive ecological whole and are not very separate from the wild. For individuals like Abhinandan Sharma—whose childhood backyard granted him views to the Bharatpur bird sanctuary in Rajasthan—it became a natural trait to become a voice of nature. </p><p>A fourth-generation wildlife photographer and filmmaker, Abhinandan developed a keen sense of animal behaviour and developed his instincts around the same since his initial period, “I was very lucky to be born in a family of photographers and my family has practised photography for over 100 years now. My great grandfather, Nathan Lal Sharma, was the photographer to the Maharaja of Bharatpur and since then the knowledge has been passed on through generations. Being there and just being able to observe my father and my uncle work in the field taught me a lot of things. The knowledge about the park and how it has changed over the years also helped shape my ideas about this park,” he shares. His ancestral family adventures and stories, and how they then worked with only analogue gear, fascinated him even more.  </p><p>Although he is blessed with the necessary trait of being ‘obsessed with wildlife and nature’ from childhood itself, his sharp eye for detail and keen observation made him gravitate towards arts even more. Reminiscing an incident when he was in the sixth standard, Abhinandan recalls a moment as the turning point of his journey. “One day after coming back from school, I spotted a nest of a bird called green barbet. I had a small video camcorder that belonged to my father and started using it to document the bird's life. Every day I used to come back from school and observe the bird in its nest.  I used to look forward to spending more and more time with the bird, and I feel that’s where I got hooked on wildlife and nature. I haven't been able to look back since then,” she says. </p><p>AlsoRead0</p><p>And so, his passion for documenting wildlife began with just a pair of binoculars. “I think it was a blessing because just by observing the behaviour I learnt a lot, which made photographing wildlife easier. I was taught not to be afraid of animals and respect them and their world,” he shares.  </p><h2>Capturing fleeting memories</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Abhinandan%20sharma_insides_3_1643372967455.jpg"></figure><p>Documenting wildlife isn’t easy. Years and years can pass by for someone to hone their skills and capture that single brilliant shot that speak volumes. “One day, inside the Bharatpur bird sanctuary, I was resting under a tree when suddenly I was woken up by the alarm calls of Indian parakeets. When I tried looking, I saw them attacking an Indian monitor lizard. As soon as I saw this, my instincts took over—in under 10 seconds I was fully alert, prepared with my camera laying on the ground. They could have gone anywhere but headed straight towards me and that’s how I got this shot!” Sharma shares. This particular shot had also won him a National Geographic Award.  </p><p>“I didn’t plan the shot beforehand, I think sometimes just ‘being present’ is enough. As a wildlife photographer, I always have to be prepared for the unknown. At times, I just have to be present at the moment and creativity just happens by itself. I believe any moment which tells a story and you feel for that moment with your heart—that should be enough,” he adds. The dynamic nature of the subject requires wildlife photographers to essentially have a lot of patience and be prepared to capture the shot when something special does happen, sometimes out of the blue too.</p><p>With a Bachelors degree in Films from the University of Mumbai, Sharma views the medium of cinema and documentaries as a necessary platform for the conservation of wildlife. “I feel that in today's time we need more impactful films—those that can bring about a change. I want to make work that is more personal to me so that people can relate to it and possibly become more compassionate for nature.” In documentaries, films, or photographs—visuals speak volumes; and in matters of wildlife, documentation helps in transferring knowledge while paving the way for effective conservation activities in the future. “My family, who had been in it for years, also played a role in conservation through their use of photography,” he quips.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>Tryst with Safari India</h2><p>Abhinandan’s passion for wildlife led him to work on a variety of projects across India. He’s done wildlife films, documentaries, and recently even shot for Safari India, a wildlife and travel show, which is Zee Zest’s latest production. “Shooting for Safari India was an absolutely beautiful experience. We were out there in the wild for a month and since we were also shooting wild animals, every second mattered to us. It was a great learning experience for me and quite inspiring to see everyone work so hard to make this show. I miss it already!” he shares.<br>His most memorable encounter on set was when the crew had been tirelessly waiting to capture a flock of Hornbill birds, but with no luck. However, just before dark, Sharma clicked a ‘cherishing’ image after being alarmed by the distinct sound of the bird’s wings.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Abhinandan%20sharma_insides_4_1643372989379.jpg"></figure><p>“When we were inside Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh, we had to shoot the hornbills (the place is quite known for them). But, the whole day had passed and we hadn't seen a single hornbill yet. The day was nearing sunset and we were supposed to leave in another 30 minutes but suddenly we could hear the sound of the wings coming from a distance. And soon, we saw huge flocks of hornbills flying above us as the sun was setting. It was a perfect scene with the Himalayas as the backdrop, and this is one moment that I will cherish for all of my life. Photographers and filmmakers usually spend months and years filming, but we were really blessed to spot and film them all in just a month's time,” he shares.</p><p>AlsoRead2</p><p>Whilst being in the wild, there is no guarantee of spotting any animal, but that, Abhinandan Sharma concludes, is the beauty of it. “Nature presents itself to me in ways I cannot imagine and I just have to document that moment in time. I think one has to find a balance between being in the present and the urge to document wildlife.” Being mindful is definitely a quality to champion for any budding wildlife photographer.</p>
