<p>By now, we’re all aware of how passionate chef Ranveer Brar is about discovering and rediscovering recipes, experiences, and stories. From his days at the gurudwara cooking <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://zeezest.com/travel/all-you-need-to-know-about-the-golden-temple-langar-2577">langar</a> and frying succulent kebabs in the bylanes of Lucknow to being the youngest chef to helm a five-star hotel’s kitchen in India at the mere age of 25 and adding a bunch of interesting TV shows like <i>Himalayas: The Offbeat Adventure</i>—Ranveer has come a long way.   </p><p>Beyond being people’s favourite chef, his relatable personality, and impeccable interaction skills is a Ranveer who never ceases to learn, a Ranveer who is curious and wants to keep pushing his limits and explore newer avenues.   </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_1_1652442450854.jpg" alt="Chef Ranveer Brar"></figure><p>The latest proof of this is his foray into the world of acting. He is starring alongside actor Pratik Gandhi in Hansal Mehta’s Baai. It is one of the stories in Amazon Prime Video’s newest anthology <i>Modern Love: Mumbai</i>—the Mumbai chapter of the popular US anthology series <i>Modern Love</i>. <i>Baai</i> revolves around the life of a same-sex couple that’s torn between love and fear. Ranveer is one half of the gay couple, the other half being, Pratik.  </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_4_1652442560962.jpg" alt="Chef Ranveer Brar Talks Modern Love"></figure><p>It came as a surprise for many, however, this time, we couldn’t say, “<i>Ranveer, aapne bataya nahi</i>” because recently, when he appeared as a guest on <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://zeezest.com/culture/the-stellar-journey-of-stand-up-comedians-into-the-bollywood-limelight-5310">comedian Kapil Sharma</a>’s comedy TV show, he revealed that he’s set to make his debut as an actor in an upcoming project. He had even mentioned that he will be playing the role of a chef—a role he is a pro at in real life. </p><p>Curious to know more deets—what motivated him to take up acting, his experience, and more—we caught up with the actor over a Zoom call.  </p><p>Read the edited excerpts from the interview here:   </p><h2>1. Why foray into the world of acting, especially right now when you are at the peak of popularity being a celebrity chef? </h2><p>I am a chef and even if I want, I can’t take that away from myself. What happens is if you want to do something for the rest of your life then that thing must give you the freedom to be whatever you want to be, whenever you want to be. And that’s what I have learned.  </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ranveer_Brar_modern_love_1652447043953.jpg" alt="Chef Ranveer Brar "></figure><p>The bigger story in my life is with food. When I moved from hotels to restaurants, that relationship allowed me to shift. When I added on the facet of being on TV, judging reality shows, my relationship with food allowed me to do that. And it made me better. I think my relationship with food allows me to express myself in ways beyond food. I don’t think it’s a huge difference or it’s a new step in my life. I look at it as an extension of myself. I feel that your core should allow you to do that and my relationship with food is secure enough to allow me to do that. </p><p>AlsoRead0 </p><h2>2. What or who motivated you to take up acting?  </h2><p>The motivation is in the character itself and you know playing a chef is easy when you’ve been playing it for a while <i>*laughs*. </i>I think what worked in my favour was to have a director who understands food and chefs. With Hansal [Mehta] sir, you know that your profession is going to be represented the right way, considering his love and passion for food. I think that was the first motivation.   </p><p>Also, because I think that <i>jo 25 saal purani shaadi hai khaane se, uska roopantaran sahi hona chahiye</i>. That was extremely important to me and with Hansal sir in the picture, I got more confident.   </p><h2>3. People often say that the key to a successful recipe/role is in the preparation. Tell us how you prepped for your role in <i>Baai</i>?  </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ranveer_Brar_modern_love_2_1652442804799.jpg" alt="Chef Ranveer Brar "></figure><p>I have always believed (and I still do) that good food is intuitive and instinctive. Over preparation can actually ruin a recipe. Khaane mein aapka ehsaas jaana chahiye. If you’re not intuitive and in the moment while cooking, it won’t translate into your dish and then what’s the difference between you and a factory?   </p><p>I don’t believe in prepping too much. As chefs, I believe, we must be in the moment and let the moment take over and reflect that in our craft. Fortunately, it’s the same thing when you’re playing a character. You need to be in the moment and be able to express it.   </p><p>The only preparation I did was a 15-minute call with Hansal sir, where he spoke about a few recipes and what he likes to cook. He ended the call with: “maze karenge set pe”. </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>4. So, it’s all about being intuitive and living in the moment? </h2><p>That’s how I have lived my life. My mom says: “when you wake up in the morning, you don’t even know what you are going to eat for breakfast, what you’re going to wear, where you have to head. You never know what you’re doing in life" and this is exactly how I want to be. And that’s how we should be as artists who are willing to be sort of channels of expression. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_2_1652442635285.jpg" alt="Chef Ranveer Brar "></figure><h2>5. <i>Baai</i> is based on the story of a gay couple, and you play one half of that couple. At any point, did you feel like you were taking on a risk or taking on too much for a debut role? </h2><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CdaGSn2jCaq/"></oembed></figure><p>I did. Initially, I sort of told myself, “<i>Bhai, sab theek hai na?”. </i>But the answer I gave myself was that I feel the right sort of curious and uncomfortable.  <br>When I decided to be a chef in 1992 and I told my parents, that this is exactly how I had felt—trying to do something that wasn’t conventional. This feeling not only pushed me towards it and made me feel I was doing the right thing.  </p><p>When I was offered this role, I felt the same rush all over again. When you’re used to getting comfortable in a role or space, for instance, being a chef for 25 years, and then you feel this rush and uncomfortableness again, then it’s a good sign. At least, that’s how I took it! </p>

<p>K-dramas are not a thing of the past, they are here to stay. Even though people are no more cooped up inside their homes, and life has gotten back to being normal and busy, the fixation over Korean dramas remains unaffected. It’s been two years since they inhabited a major part of our daily routine and continue to do so.</p><p>Even though the dramas have been there for a while, it was only during the lockdown when most of us were acquainted with them. They helped us to battle the distress, boredom and monotony that took over during the pandemic. But then, what drives Indians to K-dramas so much, especially women? There are multiple shows out there, but what makes K-dramas so special, unconventional, distinct and addictive? We spoke to a bunch of K-drama addicts to find out, and here’s what they have to say.</p><h2>Family first!</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_K-drama_1_1652970763091.jpg"></figure><p>There’s something so special about the way they portray relationships that creates an emotional connection with the viewers. Sumona Bose, a beauty writer from Mumbai, says, “One of the biggest reasons why I find K-dramas so relatable and binge worthy is because of how they portray family and familiar relationships. You see a lot of K-drama characters living with their parents when they are much older. For instance, Yoon Jin-ah, the protagonist from <i>Something In The Rain</i>, lives with her family and shows how she tries to gain freedom from that. These stories are quite relatable to young Indian women. You see Korean characters putting their family first - a cultural norm for young Indians as well. It's the way they portray families. There's an overbearing mother or the soft father, which is quite similar to a normal Indian family. You actually see yourself in such characters and understand what they are going through because you face similar instances in your life.”</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>Close to Indian culture with relatable characters</h2><p>K-dramas have a massive cultural appeal and there’s so much in common with Indian societal norms and traditions. Sonali Pawar, an editor from Delhi who perpetually binges on K-drama, believes, “As an Indian, the similar culture is what kept me hooked to K-drama, watching them one after another. Secondly, I reckon, when you see yourself in a certain character(s), you feel a strong connection with the show. In all the K-dramas I've watched thus far, the emotional depths of characters have touched my heartstrings; it's like seeing yourself in the mirror. For instance, in <i>Reply 1988</i>, the way they've portrayed the intricacies of youth is remarkable. Similarly, the portrayal of relationships - be it between friends, parents and children, or partners is both raw and real. How a mother aches for her teenage son to share more, the change in conversations and their seriousness between friends from teenagers to adults, both are something you probably only see in real life.”</p><hr><p><strong>For more Korean inspiration, check out Zee Zest's show, </strong><a href="https://zeezest.com/shows/simply-korea-all-episodes-korean-recipes-zee-zest-32"><strong>Simply Korea</strong></a><strong>!</strong></p><hr><h2>K-dramas address and normalise mental health</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_K-drama_2_1652970773295.jpg"></figure><p>But then many find them mushy and similar to Bollywood movies. “While some shows do have the mushy kind of romance that matches Bollywood where all is always well and good, many of them concentrate on what it actually looks like being a couple in this day and age-mental health issues and all (look at <i>It’s Okay To Not Be Okay</i> and <i>Hometwon Cha-Cha-Cha</i>), and how sometimes despite all the love, things don't work out (<i>Twenty-five twenty-one</i>). Great plot and superb writing are the two main factors behind binge-watching K-dramas. Not to mention, the scrumptious food and soju I get to see onscreen is a major plus point,” adds Sonali.</p><h2>It’s for women of all ages!</h2><p>And if you thought that K-dramas are only a rage among the young Indian women, it’s not! It doesn’t only cater to the young, but people across all age-groups. Interestingly, Alpana Pawar, a 55-year-old from Delhi, was drawn to K-dramas by her children and by now she’s finished watching a bunch of them. She explains, “I find their storyline, topics, production, direction and of course acting superb, especially in all the shows I have watched so far. I think family values, respect for elders, varieties of food they eat are a few factors that are relatable. As a Mum, I was drawn to K-dramas by my children and watched my first show Reply 1988 on their recommendation. After that there’s been no stopping. I have watched more than 30 shows in one year.”</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>Love is ageless</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_K-drama_3_1652970783543.jpg"></figure><p>Medha Pillai, a 17-year-old student from Mumbai feels K-dramas aren’t just about mushy relationships, good food and great locations. It’s much more than that. Explaining how they teach you to navigate relationships, she says, “For me, K-drama portrays love as something magical and rare. The uniqueness in their stories is what attracts me the most. Another most beautiful thing is the respect and loyalty they have for each other. Loyalty is one of the main components lacking in a relationship but Korean dramas portray in such a way that makes you believe in love again. One important message that K-dramas share is that take your time in finding love, don't marry someone just because you are getting old or if you are young then only you will get guys to marry you. Age doesn't matter when it comes to love.”</p><p>These dramas are a great escape from distress, and the storylines and characters somehow make the viewers believe in a better world which is beyond impressive. </p>

<p>There is no love more sincere than the love of food. Food unites us in a special way and Vishal Bhardwaj’s <i>Mumbai Dragon</i>, a part of the recently released Amazon Prime anthology, <i>Modern Love: Mumbai</i> is a beautiful reflection of just that. There are six heart-felt stories in the series but the pick of the lot is definitely the tale of Sui and Ming - a classic take on a mother-son relationship shown through the prism of food.</p><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-SaeSBmq00"></oembed></figure><p>If you have watched it, chances are you are already a fan of the Malaysian actor Yeo Yann Yann. The 45-year-old delivers a dynamic performance playing an Indian Chinese widow, living with her only son, Ming (Meiyang Chang) in Mumbai. The story revolves around Sui’s overbearing love for her son which is threatened when he shares his love with his vegetarian Gujarati girlfriend Megha (Wamiqa Gabbi).</p><p>The story narrates the insecurities of a mother holding on to her only son while trying to save her Chinese heritage. Sui wants Ming to be a dentist, marry a woman from their community, but Ming aspires to be a playback singer, lives with his girlfriend and visits his mom every weekend. Now, Megha can’t stand garlic while Sui can’t see her son’s food choices being dictated by a 'vegetarian dayan’ as Sui refers to her. Means, how can anyone choose an eggplant over meat?</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Modern%20Love_1_1652856808223.jpg"></figure><p>There’s another man in Sui’s life, a brother-cum-best friend (Naseeruddin Shah) who is at extreme ease with both Punjabi and Cantonese. He cares for Sui and Ming and is the peacemaker between the mother and son. When the time comes, it’s his character that asks her to give his son’s girlfriend a chance and food becomes the bridge between the polar opposite characters.</p><p>Sui sends dabbas for Ming every week. Normally she stuffs it with non-veg Chinese delicacies, but by the end her affection for her son's girlfriend is also delivered through a dabba that she sends for her, stuffed with Megha’s favourite eggplant dish.</p><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CdeCcZzvxoU/"></oembed></figure><p>Now let’s just take a minute to applaud Yann’s effortless Hindi and the ease with which she transitions from Hindi to Cantonese and vice versa is mind boggling. But how did she pull off an unknown language with so much aplomb?</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Modern%20Love_2_1652856825190.jpg"></figure><p>“Many have asked if I speak Hindi before I took on the show <i>Modern Love: Mumbai Mumbai Dragon</i>. I have to confess that I know more phrases in Tamil than Hindi. Don’t forget I grew up in Malaysia and Singapore, my ears are tuned to Tamil. But with the help of my fabulous coaches @strictlyvikas @varadbhatnagar who sees me twice a week on zoom and my lovely junior from @iti_sg @kewalkartik who teaches me about daily life in India. And the support I get from my wonderful director @vishalrbhardwaj, and of course @abhaydattsharma who sit through my painful beginnings. Every second of the process brought me joy! I can’t forget the amazement I felt when they told me your tongue is not behind your teeth when you pronounce the word. What a journey to tackle the lines. I hope to be able to construct my own sentences in the language later and have a proper conversation. Hope this answers the questions (sic).” - Yann explained in an Instagram post.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Modern%20Love_3_1652856835682.jpg"></figure><p>Yann’s performance makes<i> Mumbai Dragon</i> a must-watch. Also, it deals with a unique storyline of the fading Indian Chinese community. It depicts how despite their inherent language and distinct cultural nuances, food helps them blend into the social fabric of the magnificent city. It harps on the fact that food transcends all boundaries and binds people from different cultures - sharing a meal is an incredibly special experience that’s often filled with warmth and acceptance.</p><p>In the end, it’s the love that matters. </p>

<p>The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival has begun and stars of the cinematic world from across the globe have descended on the French Riviera to attend it. India is the country of honour at the 2022 Marche du Film (Cannes Film Market) and it will showcase an array of six films – each of which is expected to showcase a unique aspect of our country and its culture. </p><p>Here's the list of the six films selected by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for screening at the market.   </p><h2>1. Rocketry - The Nambi Effect (Hindi, English, Tamil) </h2><p>Actor R Madhavan turns director with this <i>Rocketry: The Nambi Effect</i>. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Suriya, Misha Ghoshal and Rajit Kapoor, this film is a biographical drama based on the life of Nambi Narayanan, a former scientist and aerospace engineer at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), who was falsely accused and arrested on charges of espionage. </p><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CdKc8k1DdMP/"></oembed></figure><h2>2. Godavari (Marathi) </h2><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://youtu.be/CJve3qbv_Hk"></oembed></figure><p>Film director and writer Nikhil Mahajan’s 2021 film <i>Godavari</i> will be premiering on this global stage on May 19, 2022. Set in Nashik, the film revolves around the life of a family that lives on the banks of the river Godavari. This is Shankar’s directorial debut and the story is about a woman, her ex-husband, and her beau stuck together under the same roof amid the COVID-19 lockdown.  </p><h2>4. Boomba Ride (Mishing)  </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Boomba_ride_2_1652859841100.jpg"></figure><p><i>Boomba Ride</i>, a Biswajit Bora directorial, is an Assamese film that captures the state of rural education with the story of a mischievous boy, who is the only student at a government school. Boomba’s attendance at the school is crucial to keep the institution running and he is aware of the same. You get to see how his teachers woo him to come to school every day to ensure that their salaries keep coming.  </p><h2>5. Dhuin (Hindi, Marathi) </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_dhuin_1652859852724.JPG"></figure><p>The Abhinav Jha and Prashant Rana-starrer <i>Dhuin</i> was released in March this year, and is directed by Achal Mishra. It is the story of a small-time theatre actor Pankaj from Darbhanga, Bihar, who dreams to become a film actor in Mumbai someday. The film traces the protagonist’s personal and professional life – him striving to save enough money to move to Mumbai, his father’s expectations of him, and more.  </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>6. Tree Full of Parrots (Malayalam)  </h2><p>Director Shri Jayaraj’s <i>Tree Full of Parrots</i> (Niraye Thathakalulla Maram in Malayalam) is about an elderly person who has lost his memory and sense of hearing, an eight-year-old boy who helps him find his way back home, and the events surrounding the search. It is a tricky search since the only detail the elderly man remembers is that his house is near a tree that is full of parrots. </p><p>Apart from these, music legend AR Rahman’s directorial debut <i>Le Musk</i> will also be premiering at the Cannes Film Market’s XR Program. It is a 36-minute film that incorporates virtual reality.</p>

<p>“I have come to believe that the best kind of journey is the one in which you have no particular destination when you set out.” The world may see Ruskin Bond as a writer, but he is as much a traveller. In all my years of reading Bond’s work and learning writing from him, it is his towns that have called out to me the most. Treelined Dehra, scorching Delhi, mystical Mussoorie, languorous Landour and indifferent London have played as important a role in his stories as the people. And so, on his birthday, we bring to you the towns of Ruskin Bond’s stories — and his life in them.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ruskin_Bond_in_Bangalore%2C_India_%28Jim_Ankan_Deka_photography%29_1652939301642.jpg"><figcaption>© Jim Ankan Deka Photography/Wikimedia Commons</figcaption></figure><h2>Dehradun</h2><p>No story of Mr Bond is complete without a mention of the quintessential foothill town of Dehradun. Often referred to as Dehra in his writing, this is where the writer spent a large part of his childhood and early youth with his grandmother, uncle and aunts. He also forged lifelong relationships here including friendships with Bansi, a tonga-wallah much older than him, a monkey who was brought home by his grandfather, his <i>aayah</i>, and boys his age like Somi and Daljit. The Dehradun of Bond’s stories is a small idyllic town of yore where people walk everywhere, and everyone knows everyone else. It is a city of trees, tongas and bicycles and long walks in the hills interjected by baths in the pond. A city as far from today’s bustling capital as,“While I was in England when I wrote my first novel, The Room on the Roof, which was all about the Dehra I had left and the people and young friends I had known and loved. It was a little immature, but it came straight from the heart-the heart and mind of a seventeen-year-old-and if it's still fresh today, fifty years after its first publication, it's probably because it was so spontaneous and unsophisticated.” He says in the introduction of his book A town called Dehra, which is a beautiful compilation of stories and essays about his life in the town.  </p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>Delhi</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_View_of_Connaught_Place_%28Photo_Division_photo_number_2755%29_MInfoBroadcasting_1652939374675.jpg"><figcaption>© Ministry of Information and Broadcasting/Wikimedia Commons</figcaption></figure><p>Bond never liked Delhi much. It is clear in his stories that he tolerated the city and its heat for his father, who worked at the RAF and was posted there and later for work when his bank balance dropped abysmally low. The city nonetheless features in many of his stories and memoirs and even travel tales. It is here where he, as a young boy, spent time all alone in a quarter allotted to his father amidst wilderness; it is here that he started going to the cinemas, and it is here that he saw his father and mother pass. The Delhi in Bond’s books is hot and dusty and a stark contrast to green and pleasant Dehradun. It is also new and strange for the young boy away from home but the friendship with Joseph, a neighbourhood boy in Atul Grove, his walks with his father to Humayun’s Tomb, and pictures at the fancy cinemas of Connaught Place kept Bond in good humour. “Connaught Place was just a ten-minute walk from Atul Grove and my father was always quite ready to take me around this posh shopping centre, stopping at a bookstore, where I would buy a colourful comic paper or record shop, where we would buy a record,” he writes in a chapter of his autobiography, Lone Fox Dancing. That he would return to the city some years later and become a reluctant Dilli-wallah, is something he wouldn’t have known back then.</p><h2>London</h2><p>Of all his relationships with various cities, the one with London was most tumultuous. As a young man, he was almost forced to move to London post India's independence and the apprehension, agony and pain of leaving his beloved country for an unknown land is evident in his stories. Despite that Bond spent quite a few years in England and London features prominently in his stories and books. He lived in dark windowless rooms, attics, and hostels and did odd jobs to make ends meet. It was also here that Bond finally turned into a writer and wrote his first novel, A Room on the Roof. It is another matter that the novel was set in Dehra, his beloved city. In Bond’s stories we see a facet of London that is hardly seen in popular media: the city was still recovering from War and there was unemployment and dissatisfaction, and people weren’t particularly friendly. We see a young Bond struggling to fit in and finally deciding to return to India, his real home. “I left London without any planning; I made up my mind on the spur of the moment. I gave my office a week’s notice and they had a little party for me, gave me a travel bag and the head of the office said if I changed my mind I could have my job back.” He writes in Goodbye to England while describing his return to the only country he could call home.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ruskin%20Bond_1_1652939393580.jpg"><figcaption>© Shutterstock</figcaption></figure><h2>Mussoorie</h2><p>Long before it became a tourist attraction, Mussoorie was a quiet hill town. It was the city where the writer moved to and settled in almost six decades ago and found a family - albeit a foster family. The long walks in the hills, the lone nights with unknown shadows behind him, days by the stream and tales of panthers, dogs, trees, and birds all emerge from his cottage in hills of Mussoorie where he lived for many years. Today, a trip to the overcrowded yet whimsy town is incomplete without a meeting with the writer, who despite being shy is happy to meet his readers every week at a local bookshop. “I made a window seat and through the changing seasons, I wrote more—and I think better— than any other time of my life,” writes Bond describing his life in the first-ever home in Mussoorie, Maplewood.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>Landour</h2><p>If it was not for him, half the world wouldn’t have known of Landour. The dreamy little cantonment town off Mussoorie, where Bond lives and writes from now has become a pilgrimage of sorts today. It is also the only place the author has ever owned a piece of land. Stories of his kindness towards strangers who knock at the door at odd hours are abound and the town’s few homestays are always booked out. His stories of Landour are less about walks and adventures but more about people who come over and views from his home. “I haven’t tired of the two windows in my room. The views haven’t changed but the cloud patterns are never the same, the birdsong varies and so does the blue dome of the sky. There are still people who buy words and I hope I can keep bringing a little sunshine and pleaser into their ones to the end of my days,” he concludes in his autobiography. We hope you live a hundred more years, Mr Ruskin Bond.</p><h2>Best Ruskin Bond books to read this summer.</h2><p><strong>1. <p>Prateek Kuhad is on a roll. The artiste has not just come up with his album ‘The Way That Lovers Do’ but has around 20 shows across North America in June this year. And post the pandemic, the 32-year-old Indie artiste is raring to go. </p><p>In an exclusive interview with <i>ZeeZest</i>, Prateek talks about his new sounds, music, writing non-film songs that are real, and that he would “love to work with AR Rahman and Amit Trivedi at some point”. Excerpts…</p><h2>1. Tell us all about <i>The Way That Lovers Do</i> </h2><p>The Way That Lovers Do is an album about human love and connectivity. Conceptually it explores different aspects of love. I recorded this album last year in Seattle with producer Ryan Hadlock. Sonically, I feel like it’s my best work so far. </p><h2>2. From the 11 songs in your album, which ones are your favourites and why?</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_04_prateekkuhad_gourabganguli_1653918361607.jpg"></figure><p>I’m quite proud of the whole album but if I had to pick a few favourites I would say: “Co2" and “All I Need”. Both come from a very real and emotional space. I wrote “Co2” during the pandemic and “All I Need” was written in 2019 on a quiet summer afternoon when I was in LA. That summer in LA was very productive and I wrote a lot of songs. As I said, the whole album is special, but these two stand out</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>3. You are known and loved for your folksy sounds—how is your new album different?  </h2><p>I think that the folksy thing was most true for <i>In Tokens and Charms</i> and as I have progressed since then and my sound has changed quite naturally and gradually. <i>The Way That Lovers Do</i> is definitely an evolution in that same direction and I have explored quite a few different genres. I’d rather not talk about it too much and let the listeners experience it for themselves. </p><h2>4. Tell us about the 2022 North American Headline Tour in June this year—what are you expecting? What is in store for your fans?  </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_05_prateekkuhad_pritizaboruah_1653918459840.jpg"></figure><p>I’m expecting a LOT of travel. We’re playing 20 shows across North America in June. I can’t complain though; since being stuck at home through the pandemic for so long, I really can’t wait to be out on the road, playing shows, and meeting my fans from all over the world. We’ve already sold out four shows and added a few more! The response to the NA tour has been awesome and I am super excited. We will be playing songs from the new album TWTLD along with some older hits!   </p><h2>5. Do you have any favourite Hindi film songs? Which album/song in recent years would you have worked with?</h2><p>I haven’t heard anything recently, to be honest. I really admire AR Rahman and Amit Trivedi both, when it comes to Bollywood soundtracks. I think they’ve both made some iconic albums and I would love to work with them at some point. </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>6. What is the best thing about the non-film music industry right now? </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_06_prateekkuhad_gorkeypatwal_1653918472966.jpg"></figure><p>The best thing about the non-film industry is that its non-film. Don’t get me wrong—I love so many Bollywood soundtracks and I myself have grown up on them. But I feel like the music industry in India is built around songs that are written around mostly about fictional stories. The thing about music that is not associated with films is that it usually comes from songwriters who tell their own story; it’s more real and tends to come from a place of real emotions. I think that is a special thing that listeners are really missing out on.  </p><h2>7. Cases of plagiarism are prevalent; composers are into remakes and recreations—what is your take on this era in the music industry?  </h2><p>Firstly let me just say that plagiarism is not the same thing as “remakes and recreations”. Plagiarism is uncredited, stolen work and is needless to say not cool at all. Recreating old classics is, of course, a totally okay thing to do and can be quite creative at times. I don’t have anything against remakes, but I guess too much of it can be stifling to creativity and innovation. Innovation is a super important thing in any context and in any industry. Systems should be such that they encourage innovation, not stifle them, and I see the only downside to remakes is that too much of it can end up stifling creativity—which kinda sucks.</p>

<p>In ancient India, miniature painting flourished under the patronage of many emperors and kings. However, the art of miniature painting, which was once widely popular, celebrated, and the artists flourished, slowly began to fade away.</p><p>But there is one miniaturist who has played a significant role in preserving and propagating the rich heritage of miniature art even today. Padma Shree-awardee Jai Prakash Lakhiwal learnt the intricacies of this art from his father, who was trained by the famous miniaturist, Ustad Feroz whose forefathers were painters in the Mughal court. “Miniature as a kind of art is almost like meditation. It takes long hours of dedication for artists to come up with one painting,” shares Lakhiwal.</p><p>And now, this self-taught artist has collaborated with international design brand, Kohler for the India Artist Edition - an endeavour to create a product that celebrates Indian cultural heritage. Lakhiwal seamlessly has blended miniature painting art into this household utility object - a limited-edition sink called “Quila” that effortlessly doubles up as a work of art.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Quila%20Image%20%281%29_1653908537383.jpg"></figure><p>“With India’s rich history in art, we finally thought it is time to introduce the artist edition in India and pay homage to Indian traditions and art. With this edition we want to acknowledge Indian artists and bring India’s rich heritage traditions through art in bathroom spaces. Jai Prakashi <i>ji</i>’s several years of dedication, hard work and learning of the miniature paintings from different gharanas, left us with no question but to go with the best,” said Salil Sadanandan, president, Kohler - South Asia, Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa, as he explains this unique project.</p><p>Art by Lakhiwal is traditional in every sense - be it his immaculate borders or the human faces he paints. The viewer is drawn into exploring the various details the artist depicts, all of which are heightened by the sink's expressive forms and vibrant colours. </p><p>AlsoRead0</p><p>In our interview, Lakhiwal and Sadanandan discuss the significance of this collaboration for traditional art forms in modern India, the evolution of miniature painting, why it is important for patrons and brands to support art forms, and more. Read the edited excerpts below:</p><h2>1. What makes miniature paintings interesting, how is it different from other traditional arts?</h2><p><strong>Jai Prakash Lakhiwal:</strong> Miniature paintings are fine-looking handmade paintings which are part of the traditional arts. Although the paintings come in small sizes, what makes them different and more interesting is the intricacies it’s made with. The brushwork is so complex that one may need a magnifying glass to capture the minute details.</p><h2>2. Tell us about this project with Kohler. How did you come up with the idea and conceptualisation?</h2><p><strong>Lakhiwal:</strong> Since the beginning, Kohler delved into an in-depth process, which included conducting a 10-day workshop with leading folk artists of India where a detailed brief was given to each artist. As my expertise falls in miniature paintings and styles of Kota and Kangra, we decided to go ahead with the illustration of the glorious past of the Rajputs. The painting portrays the magnificent Rajput forts through the playful activities of the royalty and is visible across the tamed and untamed landscapes where birds and animals are enjoying the spring season.</p><h2>3. Why did you decide on Rajasthan and the Kangra region to draw the story?</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_kohler_india_280481938_505299357998777_2382655687518929826_n_1653908461600.jpg"></figure><p><strong>Lakhiwal:</strong> I have dedicated several years to learning, understanding, and mastering the unique styles of multiple schools (gharanas) of miniature painting. The years of exploration made Kota and Kangra the most suitable to tell a story.</p><h2>4. There is an intrinsic work detail in miniature paintings, how did you achieve that in a household object, like a sink?</h2><p><strong>Lakhiwal:</strong> It was an elaborate process. The artwork that is created in a two-dimensional medium needed to be translated onto a three-dimensional object. The brand scanned the paintings and converted them into lithographs which were transferred onto the ceramic surface, and this is how the bespoke functional element came into existence for the bath space.</p><h2>5. As a long-standing supporter of the arts, Kohler works with artists and designers around the world on a variety of household objects. Why do you think collaborations like these are important and significant?</h2><p><strong>Salil Sadanandan:</strong> India’s diverse arts and crafts, traditions, and folklore, speak of the country’s rich cultural heritage. Emerging from different corners of the country, the artists employ diverse methods and techniques, which results in unique and distinct pieces. By the very virtue of being handcrafted creations, the product turns into a rather priceless appeal and of inimitable quality. And today, these age-old arts and crafts are finding expression in contemporary contexts, articulated in ways that preserve their authenticity while enabling them to evolve. In doing so, the artists and craftspeople, who are fundamental in keeping these traditional art forms alive and making them relevant for the current times, are also being brought to the forefront. </p><p>Collaborations like these are imperative today as they do not just put Indian art on the global map but also provide artisans with a platform to showcase their talent and prevents the time-honoured arts and crafts from fading into oblivion.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>6. How do you want to see the world of miniature painting evolve? </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_kohler_india_280561078_706690987276664_6475358763872187383_n_1653908508859.jpg"></figure><p><strong>Lakhiwal:</strong> People have now started giving value to art and therefore I feel miniature paintings will keep on evolving with time. Nowadays, art is making its space in unconventional areas like bathrooms and Kohler India is helping artists and craftsman-like us to bring our art into focus. This collaboration has given a platform to artists as well as paid homage to the rich culture and heritage of India. An initiative like this by Kohler India will help keep the artform alive and seen in every other household. The initiative doesn’t compromise the quality of the art form and at the same time, gives birth to a bespoke functional element.</p><h2>7. Any message for all the aspiring artists out there?</h2><p><strong>Lakhiwal:</strong> It is important to keep our culture, tradition and heritage alive. I am immensely happy that I am able to inspire the new generation to take up painting as a career. It always gives me pleasure to see youngsters' enthusiasm and dedication to the arts. I believe that our country has always been rich with traditions and arts and collaborations like these bring these intricate and exemplary artforms into the limelight. I feel aspiring artists need to stay true to their art and should be devoted, rest everything will fall into place.</p>

<p>The pandemic might have put a temporary pause to physical art exhibitions and cultural exchanges, but it hasn’t deterred the spirit of Kiran Nadar, the chairperson of Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA). One of India’s most prominent art collectors and philanthropists, Nadar exudes positivity and is looking at the silver lining. We catch up with Nadar about her vision, and resilience of the art world during the pandemic, and KNMA’s new museum.</p><p><strong>Edited excerpts: </strong></p><h2>1. Tell us about the Kiran Nadar Museum of Culture and Art</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Kiran%20Nadar_1651305513881.jpg"></figure><p>The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and Culture will be spread across eight acres on NH8. It is being designed by one of the best architects in the world—Sir David Adjaye, who’s doing a brilliant job. The museum probably will be the first time in the world when someone has attempted something of this kind. It will have art and culture all under one roof. So from music, instruments, dance et all to art shows—the new space will have everything under one roof. </p><h2>2. When will the new space be ready?</h2><p>We lost a year because of the pandemic, but we hope to have the museum ready in about three years.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>3. KNMA in Delhi’s Saket was the first private museum of art exhibiting modern and contemporary works from India and the sub-continent. With the new museum construction underway, do you think Delhiites are a museum-going lot?</h2><p>Unfortunately, the city that has the least culture of museums in Delhi. It is a very stultified city where people would rather go to the mall than come to a museum. But that’s our idea, we want the museum-going culture to develop in the city. Be it an auto or a taxi driver, art should be accessible to all. We want to encourage people at every level and not just the elite to see and relate to art—it doesn’t matter if you can’t buy it. I love the way museums function abroad and the amount of crowds they get—the lay public who visits—that’s what we need to become, more intrinsically related to art.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Raza%201_1651305604023.jpg"><figcaption>Gestation by SH Raza 1988, Acrylic on Canvas</figcaption></figure><h2>4. Why do you think it is important to promote the love for art in India?</h2><p>We have such a rich art heritage that we need to remember—Ajanta, Ellora, miniature paintings. While Indian art of today is reflecting our origins, but it is also evolving. Therefore, if we can get more people to come and get people more involved, that is the aim of this journey. </p><h2>5. Tell us about your journey of 11 years, from the inception of KNMA Saket in 2010 to now?</h2><p>While the actual museum was born in 2010, the idea was in my head for at least five to six years before that. As an avid art collector, I had about 500 to 600 artworks back then and now we have about 8,500. Over the years, my focus has grown as I’ve realised that the private sector can do something to promote art and make it more viable for audiences. I have also seen a slow yet steady change in people’s attitude to the idea of an art museum. Eleven years ago, when KNMA was an infant, it was difficult for us to persuade schools to send their children to an art museum—there was a basic indifference. But, today, people are more willing and enthusiastic.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Raza%202_1651305610644.jpg"><figcaption>Bombay from Malabar Hill by S.H. How did the pandemic impact the art world?</h2><p>I assumed art was going to face difficult days during the pandemic but the industry showed its resilience. Artists faced tough days but endeavoured to do more. Galleries came together, did collaborations and shows together, and managed to sell works. The auctions were doing very well, collectors were buying, and new buyers came to the forefront. People who never looked at art for their homes are now considering it. Many artists have done interesting works. For example, Atul Dodiya did 366 works during the lockdown—a collection that we are currently exhibiting and also have acquired. Artists have had time; they have been in their studies, locked down with families.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>7. What about the impact on your museum?</h2><p>As everything was available at the click of a button, we got much more footfall digitally during the pandemic as we opened our collection online and organised virtual walkthroughs. We had 165 million digital visitors last year as opposed to 80,000 physical visitors in 2019 before the pandemic. I just wish we could have a similar number of people walking into our museum.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Somnath%202_1651305650637.jpg"><figcaption>Somnath Hore’s Woodcut print on paper</figcaption></figure><h2>8. How important is the India Art Fair according to you. What is KNMA doing at the 13th IAF?</h2><p>Art Fairs are held across the world every year and it’s great that we’re in the 13th edition of the India Art Fair. The most important thing is despite everything, they have managed to continue. At KNMA, since we don’t sell, all we try to do at the art fair is have a focus and somehow promote people to come and visit both our museums. This time we’re doing a project on artist Somnath Hore at IAF. I’ve also been invited to give a talk on ‘Why Culture Matters’, where I will be speaking about my love for Indian and South Asian art and what it takes to open access to and make culture a part of life for every Indian. </p><h2>9. Tell us about the two new shows that KNMA is running parallel to the IAF?</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Somnath-3_1651305664188.jpg"><figcaption>Somnath Hore’s Refugee Family, 1960, Etching</figcaption></figure><p>Every year, we open a show before the IAF so that we get more visitors and eyeballs. This year we’re celebrating the centenary of two legendary artists—Somnath Hore and S.H. Raza. I’ve been an avid collector of Hore’s works over the years. The kind of noticeability he deserved earlier, he’s got now—which is wonderful. Lot of people are interested in collecting his work as he has such a diverse practice —sculptures, etchings, drawings, prints. He was a teacher, an artist, and left such a rich legacy. So, for his centenary year, we feel we owe it to him to show his works. The exhibition titled The Birth of a White Rose is running at KNMA Saket for visitors. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Raza%203_1651305683079.jpg"><figcaption>SH Raza’s Bahori Kadal (Kashmir), 1949, Gouache on paper</figcaption></figure><p>For Raza, there was meant to be a centenary exhibition in Paris but it got postponed. So we felt in some way we should contribute to showing his works as he’s one of the Progressives, early modernists, and someone who’s important for our collection. Titled <i>Traversing Space: Here and Beyond</i>—Raza’s collection of works, before the artist started his famous metaphysical abstractions, exhibits the young artist’s journey from an academically trained painter with realistic inclinations to one of the founding figures of modernism in India. The show will be inaugurated at Delhi’s Bikaner House on 29 April.</p><h2>10. Did you take up acting classes for your Bollywood debut?</h2><p>Bollywood and acting are things that were completely unfamiliar to me and hence, when the the opportunity to act in <i>Anek</i> came to me, I was flabbergasted. I had never tried my hand at acting before so I was excited to give it a shot and learn new skills. I did have to attend several acting classes and workshops at MCCC (Mukesh Chhabra Casting<br>Company) while preparing for my role.</p><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CcGqdBToWZn/"></oembed></figure><h2>2. How did you land the role in <i>Anek</i>? Tell us more about your character.</h2><p>I had moved to Mumbai just a few months prior to being cast for <i>Anek</i>. I was told by my agent that I had to attend a meeting for a role in a film but neither of us had any further information because it was confidential at that time, and I had assumed the role to be a minor one. I remember being excited to go to the meeting because being 18, I was thrilled to experience new things.</p><p>When I met Anubhav Sinha, the writer and director of <i>Anek</i>, he told me that he wanted to cast me in his next film as the female lead. I was completely taken aback because it was so unexpected. I was quiet on the fence about it initially because I knew what a huge challenge it would be. I didn’t know if I was ready to make such a big decision but I considered the many other factors that were in the picture, such as the space it would give me to grow as a person and also all the new skills I would get to learn. I received the script much later and was happy to find that Aido, my character in the film, was an empowered three-dimensional character that I could explore extensively. She embodies a strong, liberated female-lead and I hope I did her justice.</p><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CaKgZwsPR-U/"></oembed></figure><h2>3. Was it challenging to play a boxer? Did you train for it?</h2><p>I had to completely get out of my comfort zone and push myself as hard as possible to train for <i>Anek</i>. It was initially very difficult for me to do so because growing up, I was never an athletic person and I seldom did any physical training. But I soon began to enjoy the process of learning how to box. Besides that, my trainer, Rohit Nair, also had me do a lot of weight training in order to look the part. I started spending most of my time at the gym and it was refreshing because it felt like I was a completely different person. Besides that, I had to work on a lot of other things such as my Hindi, learning how to ride a 2-wheeler, and since it is an action movie, we needed to make the fights look as real as possible. To achieve that, I also had action training on the side.</p><h2>4. Casting northeast actors in mainstream Bollywood movies is like looking for a needle in a haystack. In fact, northeast language movies and web shows are almost absent in the OTT space. You think that has changed with time?</h2><p>With the development of more and more OTTplatforms, I hope the time has arrived for the<br>people from the northeast region to be better represented. The northeastern region has eight states, each being extremely unique in their own cultures. The region is rich with diversity and possesses gripping stories and voices that are yet to be told. Being from Nagaland, I know that there is a lot of untapped talent there-in many spheres-and I cannot wait for it to come to light.</p><h2>5. The casting for Northeast actors is quite stereotypical in Bollywood, what are your thoughts on this?</h2><p>I feel that things are changing in this industry, slowly but surely, because more roles are being provided to actors from the northeastern region as compared to the past. But there is still a lot of room for improvement that needs to be made. The people from my region are extremely unique and as interesting as the rest of the country, and that is something I would like to see being more explored. Three dimensional roles in films that do not require their ethnicity to be the focal factor of their character would be a cool and fresh perspective on it.</p><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CK9PnBXHYyD/"></oembed></figure><h2>6. A lot has been said about the decision of casting Priyanka Chopra in <i>Mary Kom </i>instead of a face from the northeast. The actress herself admitted the role should have gone to a northeast actress. Do you feel that happens because films are made with a commercial aspect in mind?</h2><p>Yes of course. I think most films are made with a commercial aspect in mind. But that doesn’t excuse the under-representation and misrepresentation the people from minority communities are subjected to.</p><h2>7. Did you face any racial discrimination when you moved from Nagaland to Mumbai? Did you have any of such personal experiences which highlights the struggles a person from the northeast is subjected to?</h2><p>I have had my share of being called racial slurs and having my accent made fun of, or sometimes, people are blatantly ignorant. But I think there are a lot of layers when it comes to discrimination. It could be the stereotype people have of our characters based on our appearance, or even how dismissive people could be in a work environment. The stereotypical boxes we are placed into, across several different fields, is in many cases also a product of racism.</p><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CNFbY7Gnv0E/"></oembed></figure><h2>8. Take us through your beauty ritual. Any age-old beauty tips/homemade beauty products that you use? Any Naga food that’s good for the skin? Please elaborate.</h2><p>My beauty regime consists mainly of exfoliation, hydration and most importantly, sunscreen.I have acne-prone skin so it’s difficult for me to find the right products that work for my skin, but I’ve found that the serums from The Ordinary work best for me. I use the niacinamide, lactic acid and alpha arbutin serums, and exfoliate my face with an AHA BHA peel once a week. Our diet also plays a huge role in what our skin looks like. Despite the diverse food habits that we follow, Nagas also eat a lot of vegetables, and organic and forest herbs. Our diet is a lot healthier and I think that reflects on our skin.</p><h2>9. What’s your favourite look off the ramp?</h2><p>In all honesty, I am not as fashion-literate as I would like to be. I also prefer comfort over everything because I feel more confident that way. Recently, my go-to outfits have been straight-cut jeans and blazers, keeping it chic and casual. I also prefer to buy clothes that can be worn in different ways, like a capsule wardrobe, and clothes that have quirky and cute details.</p>

<p>A large part of our childhood was spent reading <i>Archi</i>e comics and filmmaker Zoya Akhtar is all set to take us on a nostalgic ride with her live-action musical—an Indian adaptation of the iconic comics—with her next movie, <i>The Archies</i>. It features Shah Rukh Khan's daughter Suhana Khan, Amitabh Bachchan's grandson Agastya Nanda, and Boney Kapoor's daughter Khushi Kapoor in lead roles and also marks their Bollywood debut. Recently, Akhtar shared the teaser of her upcoming adaptation that stars Suhana as Veronica Lodge, Khushi as Betty Cooper, and Agastya as Archie Andrews. Veronica, also known as Ronnie and Ron, is an unrivalled fashionista and Archie’s love interest. She’s best friends with Betty, who also loves Archie—a love triangle worth watching. She’s rich and privileged, and one of the main vocalists and the keyboardist of the eponymous rock band.</p><h2>2. The blonde and beautiful blue-eyed girl next door is the lead guitarist of the garage band. Contrary to her best friend Veronica, she comes from a middle-class family. She is a talented student who loves reading, writing, cooking, and is good at sports too. The best part about her is how she manages to maintain her friendship with Veronica despite the rivalry for Archie’s love.</p><h2>3. Agastya Nanda as Archie Andrews</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_AGASTYA_1652721521385.jpg"></figure><p>Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson Agastya Nanda is the main protagonist of the movie and plays the titular character. Popularly known as America’s typical teenager, his character is the red-headed lover guy who isn’t focused on his academics as much as he is on dating. He’s the rhythm guitarist of the band, and has a liking for both Veronica and Betty that keeps the love triangle going. </p><h2>4. Mihir Ahuja as Jughead Jones</h2><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CVE0SQAo0gU/"></oembed></figure><p>Best known for his performances in movies like <i>Bard of Blood</i>, <i>Super 30</i>, and <i>Stage of Siege</i>—Mihir will be playing the character of Jughead, Archie’s best friend. </p><h2>5. Sharing the teaser, she wrote, “So I wrote some music and sung some songs for #thearchies, a film by Zoie Akhtar. Oh… and also… I’m in it.” However, her character has not been disclosed yet. </p><h2>6. Going by his on screen look, he could be playing the nerdy teen, and the youngest in the Archies gang, Dilton Doiley.
