<p>Banjara Market in Gurugram is a one-stop destination for all your home and kitchen décor items, and it's not just another flea market but a place where you will find high quality, artisanal products at throwaway prices. </p><p>Home to around 50 shops, this over 20-year-old market is spread across the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) land. It is said to house Rajasthan's nomadic community of Gadiya Lohars, whose ancestors they claim migrated from Chittorgarh around 20 years ago. </p><p>Shop owners and artisans donning traditional clothes, start to set up stalls as early as 7 am at this flea market that though runs round the clock, but has an official closing time of 10 pm. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Parth-inside-image-1_1623670270848.jpg" alt="banjara market gurgaon"></figure><p>Known for their impeccable designs, the products at this market range from furniture, to crockery, to home décor items, such as closets, mirrors, wall hangings, and more. While, like every other flea market, the collection here comprises of many discarded branded products; but the main takeaway is the artisanal goods made from scratch. The one of a kind artwork on them done to perfection by skilled workers, with detailing such that buyers often claim to have never seen anywhere else, is something that attracts customers from across the country. </p><p>One such example is of a Nagpur-based baker, photographer and content creator, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.instagram.com/parthbajaj/"><span style="color:hsl(0,0%,30%);"><u>Parth Bajaj</u></span></a>, who flew all the way to the NCR region, just to buy rustic vintage décor for his new home from the popular market. "I planned to visit Banjara Market after the 2020 lockdown when I saw many influencers posting pictures and videos of the place. Several brands started selling products they had acquired from the market. In fact, you can also shop online on the website, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://artisansofbanjara.com/pages/about-us#:~:text=Artisans%20of%20Banjara%20is%20a%20social%20initiative%20by,lockdown%20rules%20and%20worsening%20conditions%20of%20the%20e"><span style="color:hsl(0,0%,30%);"><u>Artisans of Banjara</u></span></a>. So, even without a list in hand, I managed to buy at least 30 to 40 items from there," he says.    </p><p>Let's find out what more he explored at the market, that has now resumed for public after being shut in the second COVID wave. </p><h2>Surprises at Banjara </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Parth-inside-image-4_1623670284557.jpg" alt="banjara market gurgaon"></figure><p>One of the most surprising elements at Banjara Market for Bajaj was its large area. “I honestly couldn’t cover even 20 per cent of it. During the two hours that I spent there, I just saw the tip of the iceberg,” he says, adding that everything was one of a kind with only few pieces of each.</p><p>“There were really beautiful frames which I haven't seen anywhere else except in European cafés. There were huge six-feet tall frames, literally the size of a door, in shades of blue. These aren’t available in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://zeezest.com/homes/10-home-decor-markets-in-delhi-for-your-next-shopping-spree-2636">home décor stores</a> or online, he further informs also mentioning that one can even get furniture such as, wooden tables and chairs made from scratch..</p><p>Speaking of the variety and the unique artwork he came across, Bajaj recalls, "There is nothing that you won’t find here whether it is home décor or crockery; from ceramic to glass, metal and wooden items and appliances."</p><p>In order to make the most of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://zeezest.com/travel/7-flea-markets-you-should-visit-least-once-in-life-zee-zest-4041">Banjara Market,</a> Bajaj recommends that one must visit early between noon and 1 pm because it takes at least three to four hours to just window shop. But their products with minor defects, end up being available in Banjara market.</p><p>"You just need to have a good eye to find what's best for you. Being an open area, all the products have dust on them which might make them look old and used, even if they are not. Therefore, whenever I buy anything from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://zeezest.com/homes/ikea-s-new-worli-city-store-opens-today-and-here-are-our-top-10-favourites-1101">flea markets</a>, I make sure to sterilise them before using. As long as you take good care of them, it's fine," he says.</p><p>"The quality is amazing; the wood is also quite nice as they don't use plywood. And I feel, even if it gets damaged in three to four years, it's still a good deal. In fact, many of my friends who have bought furniture from here, are happy with the quality even after two years. <p>“Growing up in Hyderabad, there was and still is a beautiful garden at my parents’ home, lush with flowering plants and vegetables, so I've always been fond of greenery and loved the freshness and relief they offer,” says Ushma Shah, who’s taken up the mantle of setting up a garden at her in-laws’ terrace in Mumbai. She spends at least half an hour tending to it every day, “On some days I spend more time when I fertilise them or re-pot the plants,” she adds. This is the story of the average millennial and Gen Z Indian, who are finding peace with plants and are feeling connected with nature like never before, just check Instagram for #PlantParent--it has 705K entries. Square footage and rents are expensive and space is limited. Vinayak Garg of LazyGardener explains, “Our parents’ generation always had plants, but they never called themselves gardeners. There would always be a few basic plants in every household—curry leaf in the South, tulsi in the North—and then as per interest, there would be more. This habit was lost when the younger generation moved to bigger cities and lived in small apartments with restricted space. But the need for greenery was always there and so a pattern emerged, where plants moved from the ground to the balcony, and now inside our homes. The urge to do something for Mother Nature has contributed to the popularity of trends such as ‘sustainable living’ and ‘plant parenting’” says Aditi Khattar of The Greenish Affair, adding that social media is another huge influence. “People tend to follow trends and interior styling which showcases a lot of houseplants and greenery. It is a common sight on decor blogs, Pinterest or design magazines. The world went into lockdown and people got back to the little joys of life to expend their energies. Gardening being one of them.”  </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Plant-parent-inside-image-3_1624549097521.jpg"></figure><h2>The significance of parenthood </h2><p>The pandemic and the subsequent months of lockdown left many people yearning to build real connections. While human interactions were best kept six feet apart, pets bring a set of responsibilities that can become overwhelming very quickly. Plants offered respite to many and the term ‘plant parent’ became even more ingrained in popular culture. “Plants like peace lily and aglaonema, come with beautiful foliage and are efficient at removing indoor pollutants produced by your wall paints, furniture and appliances. Plants are known to enhance your mood and thus increase productivity. They help counter anxiety and depression effectively,” explains Khattar. During the lockdown, Shah has sowed seeds for everything from herbs such as basil to coriander, to vegetables such as tomatoes and even potatoes! </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><p>Though balcony gardening isn’t new, the terminology has come a long way with ‘plant parenting’. Garg says that it is important to understand that life goals and milestones for Gen Z and millennials have changed. It’s no longer about owning a house and car, or marriage and kids, “Having said that there is an innate desire to take care of something, nurture and have something to anchor one’s life. Plants offer that and it is not about having a lot of plants. Even a single plant is enough for the need to nurture,” he explains. Plants are another way to satiate the need to raise and nurture a living being, but with less demands or responsibilities to suit today's urban lifestyle. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Plant-parent-inside-image-4_1624549115867.jpg"></figure><p>There is a sense of achievement with plants that further builds the confidence to grow more. It is this and the impetus ongoing organic that is driving even the smallest apartments to sprout a few herbs and leafy greens. “Herbs are the easiest to grow and are widely consumed. Vegetable gardening is a trend that gained popularity because of the pandemic. It is also very popular among parents as it is thoroughly enjoyed as an activity by kids,” says Khattar.  This is closely tied to the equally popular slow and conscious living movement. Plants help you be aware of the role nature plays in our lives and respect it. The same respect leads to meditative serenity and peace of mind. “Tending to my own garden helps me relax, I watch the tiny ecosystems that are created by plants in my flower bed, I have tiny songbirds that visit and one pair even made a nest and had a baby in my balcony. The bees and bugs and little ladybirds all thrive and play their individual role in keeping the ecosystem going,” elucidates Archana Shivanandan of Plant Stylist, Mumbai. </p><p>AlsoRead2</p><h2>How to become a plant parent</h2><p>Balcony and window gardens are flourishing across urban India, there is a lot of trial and error when it comes to understanding what can grow and what can’t. Why Do You Want a Plant? </h3><p>It is important to understand the motivation behind you wanting to nurture a plant. “Is it because it is going to be part of your room as an accessory or for the purpose of nurturing. In case of the former, any plant that serves your purpose works. But if you want to nurture and be part of a plant’s growth process, you need to ensure you are choosing the right plant. </p><h3>2. Make your local nursery your new best friend </h3><p>The best way to find answers to basic gardening queries is to go to a local nursery. They will also help you pot and repot plants, especially when your space is small. Nursery owners are the best resources to know what plant will work in your city and location. They will also tell you how to best care for the plant you’ve chosen. </p><h3>5. Steer clear of succulents </h3><p>Succulents have become all the rage in the last few years as desk plants or as part of terrariums. Our experts however suggest you steered away from them. Shivanandan clears it up, “Many soft succulents are not likely to survive low light and high humidity levels that we have indoors, so save your money even though they are cute.”</p><h3>6. Of herbs and veggies </h3><p>Growing veggies at home is a process that requires patience. It can take four to five years to understand how a veggie will grow, about pest control and to get a good yield. A lot will also depend on your consumption pattern, what you eat and how frequently. “I started in 2012 and grew everything I could find. Some worked better than others. While spinach flourished, I was only able to grow a single <i>bhindi</i>,” he says. Herbs on the other hand, though sturdy will need a lot of sunlight, so choose appropriately. </p>

Smitha Zachariah, creative head, ZXP Design says, “This movement is not the beginning of a Hans Chris Andersen fairy tale but a common desire to live in a world outside of the one we currently live in, where there are no mobile phones pinging you constantly, no urgent work emails, no evenings spent responding to the demands of a tyrannical boss, no labour beyond domestic chores.” Greenery is an important part of the cottagecore aesthetic, so even though you may not have access to your own little garden, you can brighten up your indoor spaces with a touch of green. “Don’t be shy to throw in of planters, and hanging and standing flower pots to bring the outdoors in. Natural materials are a must - think rattan, rich wood, and woven tapestries such as wool or linen. For palettes, earthy tones such as beiges, browns, and creams offer a strong yet soothing base, which can then be accentuated with shades of rust, ochre, olive, and teal. “Once these basics are set, you can move to choosing furniture and accessories that capture the essence of cottegecore. The goal is to find objects that burst with life and meaning and will inspire you to look inwards and close in on your internal rhythm. This meaning can stem from personal nostalgia and identity, like pulling out your mother’s brass kitchenware or hand-embroidered table napkins onto the dinner table. Or it can be objects that embody their maker’s mind and spirit. From a simple wooden table with its existence recorded in its grain to a handmade clay pot embellished with marks from the fingers that spent hours shaping it,” says Siddharth Sirohi, founder, Baro Design.</p><h2>Keep a mix of old and new </h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_3-Hermosa-Design-studio_1622634772015.jpg"><figcaption><span style="background-color:rgb(255,255,255);color:rgb(77,81,86);">©</span>Hèrmosa_Design</figcaption></figure><p>Lighting is an important aspect and candles are a great option when cultivating a cottagecore aesthetic. However, it is not always feasible to keep a candle burning throughout the night and it may also prove hazardous. “A suitable alternative to the ambient lighting provided by candles is going for an electric candle. Exposed Edison bulbs and dainty fairy lights with a soft and warm glow are also interesting substitutes for candles. A good scented candle, after all, can be expensive. A more budget-friendly option is to light incense sticks. Opt for scents like sandalwood, eucalyptus or orange blossom,” says Sujata Chitalwala, principal designer, Designers Group. Using natural wood furniture with natural grains connects a space to its surroundings and adds character. Antique furniture can blend well with newly bought furniture; if there’s a difference in wooden stains make sure that the era of the pieces feels coherent by their location and natural lighting. Pranjal Agrawal, CEO, Hèrmosa Design Studio says, “You can use a rustic bohemian finish with cane weaving, adding a table cover of soft pastel colours. The soft cushioning should also have a contrast with the wooden stains. The charm of a cottagecore setting is often the quirky and eclectic mix of old and new that gives the feeling of a cosy and welcoming space. Lokendra Ranawat, CEO & co-founder, WoodenStreet says, “It is a good idea to replace your bland curtains and bedsheets with floral patterns or stripes and checks. You can also bring out all your vintage China crockery and put them up on display. Buy vintage, rustic wooden furniture to match the vibe of the interiors. From a farmhouse kitchen table to a rocking chair, wood can do wonders in incorporating cottagecore.” And voila! Your English-inspired countryside living is at your doorstep.</p>

<p>It's no secret that the light in your home can make or break the décor—which is why choosing the right window treatments is imperative. Your window treatments will modulate the flow of light into your home while also adding an aesthetic element. But where should you get started? With options ranging from curtains, shades and blinds, the choices are many. So, we decided to get the experts on board—Amitha Madan, Principal Architect, Treelight Design and Behzad Kharas, Chairman & Managing Director, BNK Group—who'll help you make the right choice. </p><h2>The right fit for your space</h2><figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_The-right-fit-curtain_1623248866202.jpg"></figure><p>Curtains, blinds or shades—the choice should be determined first by the space and secondly by personal preference. As Kharas puts it, “The choice is not between blinds or drapes but in the context of window dressing suitable for that space.” So, for instance, if a room has narrow windows, then blinds are the best solution. However, a room that has big windows lends itself to draped curtains better.” The selection also depends on the type of project. A designer doing up a residential space would give first preference to drapes, whereas it would be blinds for a commercial space,” adds Kharas. </p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>Go with your gut</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Go-with-your-gut_1622639979027.jpg"></figure><p>Madan believes it all comes down to the basics. “At a fundamental level, the idea of drapes is to modulate light. So, consider that first—how opaque or sheer you want them as that’s the real purpose.” She believes this is what should lead you to the right window treatment. Once you've narrowed it down between curtains and drapes, let your instincts guide you.</p><p>Apart from these, there are a few more considerations to take note of. A larger room is more suited to full-length curtains—hanging the rods closer to the ceiling will also add volume to the space. Also consider your locality—if you stay in a busy urban area, you may want to go with thicker curtains to cut out the sound of traffic to an extent. However, when it comes to design, Madan believes you shouldn’t be fixated on an idea, but rather go with which colour or texture is most attractive to you. "Ultimately, you're going to look at it everyday, so go with what feels right instinctively. Don’t get too swayed with opinion but try going with what you enjoy looking at," she advises.  </p><p>So, if you're planning on re-doing your window dressing, Madan points out to what's trending in curtains and blinds in 2021. </p><h2>Craft is back</h2><figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Craft-is-back-curtains_1623248909167.jpg"></figure><p>Craft is back in upholstery in a big way—and has also been given a modern take. <p>Giving your home a facelift needn’t translate into a remodelling job, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg. Sometimes, it's just about the little details—a few décor changes here or a reupholstering job there is all it takes to breathe new life into a space and make it as good as new. We asked two design professionals—Siddharth Sirohi, Founder, Baro Design and Smitha Zachariah, Creative Head, ZXP Design—who shared their expertise on the subject. As Sirohi puts it, "Structural changes can be expensive, disruptive, time-consuming and fixed in their outcome. At times, you may not even be allowed to make those changes. So, if you want to give your home a new look, start with the easiest changes and work your way up to the degree of change that you may want."So, if you're looking to do a home improvement job, read on to get started. </p><h2>1. They act as dead weight and prevent you from building a light, relaxed space. Whether it's furniture or artefacts, invest in quality pieces as they will inhabit your home for years to come. Don't be swayed by trends, but instead go with timeless designs. </p><h2>2. This is perhaps the best reason to invest in furniture that is not fixed or built-in. Loose furniture gives plenty of variable combinations. By creating different focal points, you can achieve completely different results. According to Zachariah, a pillar or a beam at the wrong place is the best opportunity to do something completely different by actually highlighting it: "Make it dramatic! Use interesting patterns or wallpaper on beams. You can even highlight a pillar by getting an artist to work on it."</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>3. Carpets are equally influential and can really hold a room together. As Sirohi points out, "Jeff Bridges' character famously quoted in <i>The Big Lebowski</i>—get a new rug, it will change your room!" You can also add more character to a piece of furniture by reupholstering with traditional textiles—look for elements that tell an interesting story.</p><h2>4. Even if you're not looking at investing in new art, you can recirculate and reposition existing pieces to change things up immediately. </p><h2>5. Colours have a strong correlation with our emotional needs and are known to alter moods significantly. Choose colours based on what emotions you would like a space to invoke. So, for instance, your bedroom should ideally be in soft neutrals, while you could play with brighter hues in the common areas of the home. Another approach is using contrasting hues but ensuring that the colours balance and draw your eye in a coordinated way. </p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>6. Even the most aesthetically decorated room can be destroyed by bad lighting, while good lighting can enliven the dullest of spaces. Bold accent pieces also add to the décor and can be used to create the right mood. </p><h2>7. Add one or two large decorative planters in your living room that not only add to the décor but also bring in freshness. Succulents look great too and require the least maintenance—you could keep a cluster of them on a coffee table or also dot your shelves with them. Last but not the least, fresh flowers by the day and scented candles by night, will never fail to uplift the space. </p>
